what is the largest land animal not represented in zoos

Wild Bactrian camels aren't in zoos, are they?

Unless there is some individual in obscure Chinese or Mongolian zoo, otherwise no.

But Wild Bactrian camels are kept captive in two breeding stations run by WCPF in Mongolia = huge gated pens near Gobi desert. Older one is in Dzachyn Us and it has reached its capacity. A brand new one has 60 hectares in Toli Bulag that got first 2,5 animals from Dzachyn Us in September 2024.

Prague zoo financially supports both places, its staff assisted in the latest transport to get some hands-on experience, and has plans to import wild Bactrians to Europe. However this plan is still uncertain and not in nearest future. I would not call it a plan at all, more like an item on a wishlist.

Few pics published on the zoo director´s FB recently.

Definitely not the largest, but Tapanuli orangutan and Cross river gorilla may qualify as some fairly large species that have not been definitively held in captivity.

Tapanuli Orangutan *has* been definitively held in captivity, per genetic testing which demonstrated that "Bubbles", a wild-caught female who died at San Diego Zoo in 1995, was a pure example of the species :p she has a small handful of (hybrid, obviously) descendants scattered around the USA.

The Zoochat news thread for that billionaire's zoo in India reported the other day that they have a Tapanuli Orangutan.

I stand corrected. I knew there was an analysis going on but didn't realize they identified the source to an individual.
