This may sound silly, but the first time I saw walruses (at Hagenbeck) it suddenly occurred to me that the North Pole was real. Until then, I knew that the North Pole was real, but it was nothing more than a place on a map or on pictures from geography books. For the first time I could actually feel that the North Pole was a real place that I could reach if I just walked for long enough.
It could have happened with polar bears or reindeers too but for some reason it was the walruses that did it for me. Also they are amazing even without the tusks and they make the funniest sounds.
