Where would you build a zoo in the UK ?
This question is more about location and why ?
What size of zoo would you build ?
acerage and why?
Finally what style would you build your zoo ?
traditional cages or more open ?
If you built a big super zoo do you need to build Hotel facilities too?
Are you just a zoo or have a plus 1 aquaruim, theme park etc?

Gateshead/County Durham border - because there is a desperate need for a large Zoological collection there. (WWT Washington & Kirkley).
It would have to be in the style of The Wild Place, using an existing Stately home, but with maybe one specialist indoor/outdoor exhibit like Living Coasts or Marwells new Plains exhibit.
I'd like to see a large Okavango themed enclosure where herd animals could be on hard stand in inclement weather but to the visitors eye it would appear they were in the flood plain (Lechwe, Shoebill, Hunting Dog etc) and an exhibit to highlight the plight of Middle Eastern animals like the Arabian Leopard, Arabian Gazelle and numerous bird species that are shot on arrival there from Southern Africa.
The North East people would support a good institution and it would give Edinburgh Zoo, Flamingo Land and Tynemouth aquarium a good 'kick up the bum'!

I think the North East is a good call but would the animal choice have to take into account weather etc

Possibly Cardiff as it is the only British capital without a Zoo, possibly with a study collection of native wildlife species, a Bioecology combining a visitor centre/wildlife garden and live exhibits in the forest edge, rainforest and twilight edge, also species which tend to be overlooked as Blackbuck with Axis Deer in a mixed exhibit with Cranes even a combined hyrax/ marmot enclosure, chamois and alpine marmots together in an alpine exhibit and species which are rarely seen in british collections such as cacomistle.

how do you come up with a combined hyrax/marmot enclosure? That seems a pretty random mix.

If they were rock hyrax I could see that working, after all certain Zoos have mixed Meerkat with other species, has any one considered using hyrax as part of a mixed exhibit before,I know a lot of Zoos have used marmot with other species ie paddock mammals and mara.

......new zoo in the UK?

I would like to see a new zoo in Dorset. Major holiday area, no zoo for miles around, unlike Devon and Cornwall, both of which are stiff with them.

Round the corner would be handy!

:D

Seriously, would like to see something specialising in off-beat small mammals.

Could have happened many years ago if Gerald Durrell had got his way.I think Upton would have been a sweet place for a zoo. :)

I'd build my zoo in Scarborough, on the derelict site of the old marineland and zoo. Seaside resort with a large captive tourist audience, that are looking for value for money attractions.
It would be a very hands on petting zoo style with a few walk through mixed enclosures, with opportunities of close encounters and experiences.

I would build my zoo down south by Plymouth.

The zoo would have 7 different walk through enclosures and would include the uks largest lion pride.

There would be and underwater viewing area for common hippo and for the sea lions and penguins.

There would be two main lakes with islands for primate species and a large breeding center for black and white rhino.

The zoo would also house bonobo and Sumatran orangutan as well as a large indoor enclosure for manatees.

The zoo would also house jaguar, snow leopards, woolly monkeys, giraffe, grizzly bears, anteater, aardvarks and a big tropical house specializing in large snakes such as anacondas and pythons.

there would be no "cages" and all enclosures would be open topped if possible. The main focus would be on the animals however there would be a river cruise, monorail and railway train as well. There would be a amazon themed hotel also.:):)
