Hiya, I don't know where South Lakes got their animals from, but I'm 99.9% certain that they are purebreds. A member of my family mentioned hybird lemurs to David Gill a few years back and his response was abrupt to say the least... as the lemurs have bred this year, I certainly hope that they are pure!

Not sure if South Lakes are pure as they are from the early days of the collection when they took any surplus animals they could get their hands from other collections, will try to find out for sure.

Well they didn't have the White Fronted Lemurs when I first visited (1996 I think), so they were added to the collection once it had already started to find its feet with tigers, cheetah etc. already in place. If they were hybrids though that man has got some nerve - seeing as he basically told someone I know that hybird lemurs should be destroyed!

Sorry to go off topic but is this the same David Gill that is quite happy to bred Hybrid Macaws within his collection??????????

and the david gill who who left an absolute mess of his zoo in australia and a whole lot of animals died. thats of course not to mention his obligatory animal escapes.

he's an outcast here in australia.

 OK... just as I think that my view of that man cannot get any worse, it does! He is a complete joke - I just wish that someone else ran South Lakes, as I love the zoo itself, and they have some great animals and enclosures. :(

Getting back to the thread have been talking to some people i know about South Lakes white-fronted Lemurs and the verdict is they are most likely hybrids.

Stephan Standley at Blackpool Zoo appears to maintain the Brown Lemur Studbook. Presumably this covers each subspecies.

Steve Standley emmergrated to New Zealand many years ago.
Darren Webster is the studbook keeper for all brown lemurs.:)

To partcially answer your original question Cricket's stock are all pure. One of the current females came direct from Paris Zoo.
