Bad news about the Somali wild ass ( from FB ) :

Last week, we showed you a beautiful photo of some Somali wild asses living in the wild in Eritrea. And this week, we received some rare photos of a herd taken in Eritrea in 2017 by a PhD student whose doctoral thesis was partly subsidised by Basel Zoo. Among other issues, he is researching whether the Somali wild ass population in Eritrea will be able to survive, and how we can best protect them. The situation for these asses living in the wild is a very serious one. It is estimated that there are only 23-500 animals still living in Ethiopia and Eritrea. Since 2013, Basel Zoo has been supporting research projects in Eritrea and Ethiopia that seek to analyse the situation in the wild and establish conservation areas. This is a huge challenge in a region as politically unstable as this one, which makes receiving these wonderful photos even more exciting.
