We all know that domestic yak are fairly easy to keep in captivity and can be seen in many collections worldwide.
But what about the wild yak (Bos grunniens), classed as a vulnerable species in its native central Asian uplands.
The only record i can find of this species in captivity is of it being kept in 3 zoos, 2 unnamed and Chicago (Brookfield or Lincoln park i don't know).
Their track record according to the same source is not good, with no animals living beyond 3 years.

With less than 10'000 individuals in the wild, surely it is time to think about a captive breeding programme for these magnificent bovid, before it is too late.
