Group condemns wildlife attacks in Kimberley - Yahoo!7 News

A group doing research in the Kimberley region says it has uncovered ongoing brutal attacks on various wildlife living around the Fitzroy River.

The Freshwater Fish Group is in the area with Indigenous rangers monitoring and tagging the protected sawfish species.

Senior research leader Dr David Morgan says among other things, they have discovered crocodiles and goannas swimming with spears through their bodies.

"Shot crocodiles or sawfish who've had their bills cut off, quite a lot of those," he said.

"We've tagged them and someone's cut the saw off and we've caught it again without a saw which is pretty sad to see, and quite illegal acts on all accounts too."

Dr Morgan says some of the animals have been subject to a slow or inhumane death.

"Obviously, it was pretty distressing to see a large goanna with an arrow through its neck last week which wasn't nice," he said.

"People are starting to take the river for granted a little bit."
The group says it will report the most recent incidents to the relevant authorities.

oh yes sorry, it is indeed a goanna. They mentioned crocodiles in the story and the guy was on a boat, and I guess I obviously didn't look at the picture properly and thought it was a young croc!!
