Woodland Park Zoo Woodland Park Zoo Species List (28/10/25)

The new wave of species is continuing into the end of the year, it seems as since my last species from August, there have been even more new birds (not surprising), a new pack of Wolves (very surprising, I thought this would be a 2026 thing), and some other new animals. I'm looking forward to doing one last species list towards the end of the year to see how much the Zoo has evolved compared to the last, but for now:
  • Species in green means that they were present, but not signed
  • Species in red means they were either no-shows or not in the exhibit

As of 28/10/25

'The African Savanna'

'The African Plains'
  • Plains Zebras (Equus quagga)
  • Common Ostriches (Struthio camelus)
  • Reticulated Giraffe's (Giraffa camelopardalis reticulata)
  • Rothschild's Giraffe's (Giraffa camelopardalis rothschildi)
  • Grant’s Gazelles (Nanger granti)
  • Egyptian Geese (Alopochen aegyptiaca) (Usually seen just after opening)
  • African Lions (Panthera leo)
  • Patas Monkeys (Erythrocebus patas) (It seems like they're still being acclimated as the physical barriers from the viewing area have lessened, but are still present, though I did not see them still)
  • African Crested Porcupines (Hystrix cristata) (This group was apart of the game farm park raid in Oregon earlier this year, and have seemingly been made as a staple exhibit animal, taking over the former Hippo space. I believe there are 8 porcupines, but I didn't see any still, probably due to the weather)
  • Common Warthogs (Phacochoerus africanus) (actually the first time in a while I've seen them out)

'Living Northwest'
  • Mexican Gray Wolves (Canis lupus baileyi) (While they don't exactly fit the Pacific Northwest theme, they are the rarest subspecies of Gray Wolf and still very cold-tolerant. He has access to the entire Aviary, not just the main tree, so he likes to sleep on the aviary walls behind the plants, which makes him extremely hard to spot when he's not awake)

Wow! Woodland Park still has an amazing bird collection! I haven't visited it in about 20 years, but it sounds like the collection has gotten better over time (which is the opposite of the trend for a lot of zoos). I counted 103 species, give or take a few, which would put it in the top twelve bird collections in the U.S. in terms of size and diversity of species! Thank you for posting this!

NOTE: This place is slated to undergo a significant makeover starting in 2026 with the opening of the Lorikeet Aviary (currently under construction) as well as some new species arriving for the ambassador animal programs. Because of this there has been a scale-back on species seen, but there are several species kept behind-the-scenes, such as Stripped Skunk, Patagonian Cavy, Coati, American Porcupine, Guinea Pigs, Red-legged Seriema, Pharaoh’s Eagle-owl, Spectacled Owl and Aplomado Falcon as well as several snakes.

Currently off-exhibit but expected to return in the next few months: Spectacled Owls, Grey-winged Trumpeters and Green Aracaris, as the team continues to receive new species. Several species are currently undergoing quarantine, mostly birds, reptiles and amphibians.

Thank you for this great update! I'm happy to see more birds in the collection and I think that Pink-headed Fruit-Dove and Collared Finchbill are great additions!
