Your Top 5 Primates

Much like my top 10 favorite birds thread, I noticed nobody had done a top 5 or 10 list for primates yet so I have created one. Once again, you don't need to have seen that species, though it must be an extant species, and you cannot put humans in your list.

Here is my list:
1. Mandrill
2. Siamang
3. Western Lowland Gorilla
4. Pygmy Slow Loris
5. Chimpanzee

Even though I absolutely love all primates, I'm going to have to give an extremely boring answer as I'm just the most obsessed with apes.

1. Chimpanzee (my favorite thing in the world)
2. Gorilla
3. Bonobo
4. Gibbon (Favorite is siamang)
5. Orangutan

My favorite non-apes would be brown spider monkey, mandrill, emperor tamarin, gelada and weeper capuchin, not sure of the order though. I also love langurs, but not sure which type of langur would be my favorite!

I love all taxa equally, so it's hard for me to put anything to top numbers. But, if I have to choose, I think have to cheat and separate them into two categories; in term of rarity and how much I enjoy seeing them. All of these primates are all that I've seen.

Rarities
  • Kloss's gibbon

  • Natuna Islands surili

  • Gorontalo macaque

  • Gursky's spectral tarsier

  • Tonkean macaque

Casual seeing

  • Siamang
  • Sumatran/Bornean orangutan
  • Western lowland gorilla
  • Chimpanzee
  • Common marmoset

If I have to choose :)

1. Proboscis Monkey
2. Mitered Surili
3. Sillky Sifaka
3. Delacour's Langur
4. Golden Snub-nosed Monkey

I'm 5/5 on your list @twilighter :D

As for my 5 I'd have to say

1. Aye-aye
2. Proboscis Monkey
3. Golden Snub-nosed Monkey
4. Gold-and-white Marmoset
5. Mandrill

Most wanted that I've never seen:

1. Kipunji
2. Pig-tailed Langur
3. Philippine Tarsier
4. Nilgiri Langur
5. Golden Angwantibo

Here's my list:

1. Siamang (Symphalangus syndactylus)
2. Western lowland gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla)
3. Lar gibbon (Hylobates lar)
4. Drill (Mandrillus leucophaeus)
5. Golden lion tamarin (Leontopithecus rosalia)

Honorable mentions to Hamadryas Baboons, Black and Black-and-white ruffed lemurs, Orangutangs and the other species of gibbon (specially the Silvery, was really hard choosing between it and the Lar)

1. Western lowland gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla)
2. Coquerel's sifaka (Propithecus coquereli)
3. Goodman's mouse lemur (Microcebus lehilahytsara)
4. Chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes)
5. Bald uakari (Cacajao calvus)

Honorable mentions: Bornean orangutans, aye-ayes, bonobos, and the remaining gorilla species.

1. Chimpanzee
2. Pygmy Marmoset
3. Cotton top tamarin
4. Red howler monkey
5. Crowned lemur

Such a great group primates so I’d add Orangutan, Bonobo from the apes to Gelada, spider monkeys, lemurs and macaques of all sorts as well as Colobus to the list if it might be longer as well as the missing tamarins and marmosets.

But chimps are the number one for me and the new world monkeys are a favourite, with all the howlers a fascinating group and there has to be at least one lemur on my list.

Restricting my list to species I've seen, my top five, in no particular order, would be;-
  • Hamlyn's owl-faced monkey
  • Allen's swamp monkey
  • proboscis monkey
  • red uakari
  • golden snub-nosed monkey
It is extremely hard to select just five; I wish there was room to include:-
  • Kloss's gibbon
  • Philippine tarsier
  • douc langur
  • stump-tailed macaque
  • aye-aye

I hope it isn't a problem I divided this into two lists as well, otherwise my top 5 primate list would consist of lemurs only...
So now onto non-lemur list (in no particular order):
  • Orangutan
  • Hamlyn's monkey
  • Common squirrel monkey
  • Silvery gibbon
  • Silvery greater galago
And lemur list (as well in no particular order):
  • Pale fork-marked lemur
  • Black-and-white ruffed lemur
  • Red ruffed lemur
  • Black lemur
  • Collared brown lemur

Common chimpanzee
Bornean orangutan
Chacma baboon
Western lowland gorilla
Mandrill

Honourable mention to Sumatran orangutan, Hamadryas baboon, Red ruffed lemur and Golden lion tamarin.
