Zealandia has recently announced that their captive population of Maud Island Frog (Leiopelma pakeka) (or Hamilton's Frog (Leiopelma hamiltoni), if one accepts the recent lumping of the taxa, which has become surprisingly popular) will be released into the wild within the sanctuary later this year to join the existing wild population.

This follows Zealandia's cessation of holding captive Wellington Green Gecko (Naultinus punctatus) in 2019. When that happened, the captive geckos were all transferred elsewhere (including to Wellington Zoo) instead of any of them being released within Zealandia. Wellington Green Gecko apparently do already exist in the wild within Zealandia, but are almost impossible to find.

Last week, 15 Little Spotted Kiwi were transferred out of Zealandia to Cape Sanctuary in Hawke's Bay. The aim of this is to improve the genetic diversity of the existing Little Spotted Kiwi population at Cape Sanctuary, and this is the first time that Kiwi from Zealandia have been translocated to elsewhere.

Zealandia have announced that they will be receiving a new pair of senior Takahē in August of this year. The Takahē are female Arnie and male Hopi, from the Burwood Takahē Centre near Te Anau in Southland, and both of them have successfully bred before. They will be housed in the currently unused Takahē enclosure that is on the eastern shore of Zealandia's lower dam.

Hello everyone.

Could you tell me approximately how much time would be needed for a full and relaxed visit to Zealandia? Our main interest is trying to photograph as many species as possible. We plan to visit this place our last day in Wellington. We need to catch the ferry that day at 3:30 pm (we must be at the boarding gate beforehand, at the latest by 2:30 pm). Given that Zealandia opens at 9 am, is it possible to visit the reserve completely if we arrive at opening time?
