There is a good book called "Zoo Tails" written by Oliver Graham-Jones who used to be the vet at London Zoo. It is quite an interesting book which tells stories that the author encountered whilst working at London.

"Molly's Zoo" by Molly Badham and Nathalie Evans is about how they went from running a pet shop to setting up Twycross Zoo.

..........and "Chimps, Champs and Elephants" by Jack Baker is about Herbert Whitley and how he built up Paignton Zoo.

'Reared in Chester Zoo' by Janice Madden, is the story of June Mottershead (the daughter of George Mottershead who set up and ran the early zoo) and her life in the zoo from an early age.

Also, "Animal Days" by Desmond Morris about his time as Curator of Mammals at London Zoo.
(I'm going to stop going through my book collection now and go to bed!)

Postcards from the Zoo, by Darill Clements
Zoo Vet, Doctor in the Zoo, Dragon Doctor, and Next Panda, Please, by David Taylor
The Peaceable Kingdom by John Sedgewick
It Began With a Roar by Harry M. Wedgeforth and Neil Morgan

And the Gerald Durrell Books mentioned above. Also Jacquie Durrell's Beasts in my Bed and Intimate Relations .

:)

Monkeys on the Interstate and Jungle Jack by Jack Hanna
Life at the Zoo by Phillip Robinson
Zoo by _____ Gold

From Pets to Pumas by Peter A Wait is a good read about his experiences on working as both a farmhand and then a keeper at Chester Zoo.

There are a whole load of zoo books out at the moment, "The zoo on the road to Nablus" by Amelia Thomas is all about the West Bank zoo in Palestine, " Babylon's Ark" by Lawrence Anthony and Graham Spence on the Baghdad Zoo, "The Zoo Story" by Catherine de Courcy about zoos general etc. There are loads of zoo books around if trawl the Net. There are also books on Edinburgh Zoo and London Zoo also published recently. If you are interested I can let you know more.
Cheers
TwycrossZoo.

"Mister Zoo" by Doug Myers
"My Life In A Man Made Jungle" by Belle Benchley
"My Wild World" by Joan Embery
"Steve & Me" by Terri Irwin

'Reared in Chester Zoo' by Janice Madden, is the story of June Mottershead (the daughter of George Mottershead who set up and ran the early zoo) and her life in the zoo from an early age.

Having read this book i would rather super glue my eyes together than to ever read it again if i wanted ROMANTIC SLUSH i would read something by the late Miss B.Cartland.It tells you not alot about the zoo but does seem to throw mud at Goerge Mottershead for been a womaniser so what.If you do want to read about Chester Zoo you can do know worse than find a copy of June Johns book Zoo without Bars as this contains about 90% of the stories in Reared in Chester Zoo.

"The Rhino With Glue-On Shoes" is another good one I've read recently. It's full of good stories by zoo verternarians.

"Molly's Zoo" by Molly Badham and Nathalie Evans is about how they went from running a pet shop to setting up Twycross Zoo.
I am reading this at the moment and finding it very interesting. I would recommend it for anyone who is interested in the history of Twycross and its animals :)
