This is a new thread about developments and news of a very nice zoo which here in Zoochat doesn't have the attention it deserves:I'm talking of Zoo delle Maitine, near Benevento, one of the few European zoos which has Plains viscachas (and some rarities in Italy, like Wild turkeys and Cape hyraxes)

Recently,Egyptian bats have left the collection;their area will be used to expand the exhibit for the two Nile crocodiles (young exemplaries).

Also, they are looking for a partner for their Brazilian tapir and some exhibits (like the former African aviary) are empty (I don't know what species will go there)

I follow all news with interest. B/W vari is a nice new addition! Where will they go?

The zoo already holds ring-tailed lemur.

Plans for expansion (from current 4ha)?

BTW: they are already member in EAZA! F.i. Zoo di Napoli is not yet listed as such (allthough forgive when wrong ... I think they are Associate Member ....!?).

I don't know where they will be located.

Big news!

The zoo will open a new area for Mediterranean reptiles, which probably will include some big rarities!

At the same time,a tokay gecko and a viper are arrived

Zoo delle Maitine gained the EAZA temporary membership some months ago. The Associate membership is reserved to the national association (like the UIZA, the Italian Association of Zoos and Aquaria).

Earlier this year, the zoo opened a new area for Mediterranean reptiles and new exhibits for aras and Nile crocodiles (the last one is still small tho).

Owls (I don't know the exact species) are on exhibit, and during these months some interesting birds, like Kookaburras and Steller sea eagles, have arrived

Meerkats and Small-clawed otters have born.

Some news from today's visit.

Two Cotton-top Tamarins are born.

The two macaws are now hosted in an aviary near the entrance.

There are many exhibits under renovation.
One of them probably will host the ring-tailed lemurs.

Do you know which Mediterranean reptile species are kept now?
They have vipers and other snakes, green lizard and probably even the subspecies of Podarcis sicula endemic to the island of Capri (in front of Naples).
When I visited the zoo that area was closed so I had to look for photos on Internet

The zoo will collaborate with an animal recovery centre in South/Central America and will create a new exhibit for New World Monkeys.

From what I' ve seen, now the gibbons are hosted in the former Guereza exhibit and in their old aviary there is now a (or two) Bald eagle.
I'm also pretty sure that the Guerezas are now in the Ring-tailed lemurs exhibit and the lemurs now are in that empty aviary I saw during my last visit (there was a sign that said "new lemur house coming soon...).

In the American exhibit there are two tapirs.

In the aviary near the entrance there are now two Red macaws, along with the Green and red macaw. I don't know where the Blue and gold macaw is.

There are new signs all around the park.

Sorry for the bad english but I'm not at home.

The zoo will soon be the only in Italy to host a particular primate species (from the distorted photo they posted on Facebook, I suppose it's a langur or something similar).
