Zoo Magdeburg?

Like Tea Loving Dave, I'm also making a visit to Germany, but in May, I will be staying in Berlin, but will take a day trip to a zoo.
One of the logical choices would be Magdeburg, however upon reading the few reviers on Trip Advisor, this zoo has mostly terrible reviews.
Now I know everyone will have an idea of how a zoo should be, but when there are mostly bad reviews I have to ask the question., are these people just zoo haters or is it treally not worth my while.
Now compare to the reviews of Eberswalde which I have been too and really enjoyed (but isn't highly rated on here for some reason), Eberswalde has great reviews.
I'm easily pleased when it comes to zoo , I dont crave rare animals, just a well laid out place with ABC'Swith space for the animals.

I would say that Magdeburg Zoo is really good value for money. Those Trip Advisor folks I would not give the time of day .. :D

They have a notable and nice animal collection and have really come along way in recent years. Watch out for the African savannah, Giraffe House, the Snow Leopard / Amur tiger and Boreal Zone (Carpathian lynx and outdoor enclosures for tortoises, red kite) and some nice Australasian animals at the bottom end. The central part has a good range of South American animals and particularly their callichtrid and macaw / bird collection is noteworthy.

At the moment, they are building a new Chimpanzee House and Lemur Walk-through and flamingo aviary.

I certainly second those positive comments: this is an excellent zoo, more-than worth a trip out from Berlin. It does not have the glamour of, say, a Leipzig – nor is it, obviously, as all encompassing as the Berlin collections. Nonetheless, it has lots of that is excellent: I particularly like the recently built rhino area which contains other African animals as well. The giraffe house is as beautiful as any you will see anywhere. Lots of the smaller exhibits are rather special. The elephant house is something of a relic, but has a sort of 1960s charm nonetheless. I haven't seen the comments on trip advisor, but I would certainly ignore them - this is a very good, very professional zoo.

There are plenty of really good things within striking distance of Berlin. I think you have been to Cottbus, and liked it – Magdeburg is, I would say, a step up from there (although it does not have Cottbus's excellent bird collection). Rostock is also certainly worth consideration.

I was thoroughly, thoroughly impressed by Magdeburg on 05/04/2014 and as such can highly recommend it. As it has not been visited too often by Zoochatters a full blow by blow review will be posted upon my return home.

If going to Magdeburg as a day trip from Berlin and going in the weekend, use a schoenes wochenende ticket. There is a direct 2 hour RE train from Berlin to Magdeburg.

IMO Magdeburg is one it's way to become one of the best German zoos and in it's size class it is already the best in Germany, I would say.

Thanks for the info. What size class do you put it inso I can compare it with zoosI know in NRW, ie, Cologne, Krefeld, Wuppertal, Duisburg ,Zoom etc.

chizlit, your question / query is an open ended one. What do you mean with "size". Size in terms of space or in terms of class / grading?

Would:
Leipzig vs. Magdeburg as in Duisburg vs. Krefeld do?

Personally, I find it quite irrelevant and think of all 4 as bloody good zoos. :)

I thought the question was quite straight forward, Lintworm said Magdeburg was the best zoo in its size class. I was hoping for a reply from him rather than a snappy reply from you. What doesn't matter to you may matter to me, hense I asked the question.

This, by the by, is exactly what I did, and very good value for money it was too!

It is, at 16 hectares, pretty much exactly the same size as Dudley zoo - but is on the flat so feels less strenuous!

I meant zoos like Rheine, Krefeld, Dortmund & Dresden, which are not the really larger zoos (allthough in terms of absolute size larger than some) but in terms of species numbers they are more comparable.

Thanks for clearing that up for me Lintworm and TLD.
