Zoo Miami Zoo Miami 2017

Had a long visit to the zoo today which will be documented in a lengthy review in the next few days. This was my first time at the zoo in almost a decade and it did not disappoint. Mission Everglades is one of the best immersive themed complexes I've ever seen, Amazon and Beyond was quite impressive, Wings of Asia was the best aviary I've ever seen and this is the zoo to go to for hoofstock, with an excellent collection in solid exhibits. Expect tons of photos to be posted later today.

Also people on the internet are accusing the zoo of killing Josephine and spreading anger against the zoo since she was the grandmother of Harambe. The Harmabe memes people are getting really, really old and their arguments show little knowledge of animals in zoos.

Unfortunately typical for most arguments that happen on the Internet

Looks like gorillas will be phased out of Zoo Miami. I wonder if and when they will return. Trump is planning to kill the NEA, cut loose PBS and NPR

Quite disturbing article indeed, but not related at all to your post :p

Sorry guys (@GraysonDP and others), I did not find the info that Zoo Miami has the intension to phase out gorillas. Where can I find an official message about it?

Is this a sign that the Harambe saga has significantly impacted the anti-zoo sentiment or not?

No. That article doesn't even say that they are phasing them out officially, just that they are moving the lone gorilla somewhere else. My guess is that either they'll bring in a new group or that they'll use the exhibit for something else.

Also, the article only mentions Harambe because Josephine was Harambe's grandmother, so it's noteworthy. It didn't say that Miami was reconsidering their commitment to gorillas or bowing to public pressure at all, I think it's mostly or entirely unrelated to that debacle.

Yes they even say they plan to have gorillas again. The question is if they'll put a new troop in the current habitat or build a new facility (my hope.) More what I meant about the Harambe question is how relevant it is to the anti-zoo debate and if it has made that sentiment more mainstream in a significant way.

Ok, I understand. I think that's definitely an interesting question that several people would offer opinions about, but it sounds like something best discussed in a thread of its own rather than here on the Miami news thread, especially since it's not directly related to the news item.

On a similar note, I thought gorillas were going to be phased out at Zoo Miami?

I was curious about this and found this story. They sent away their lone gorilla it looks like after its companion died and then got the new gorillas in the story you posted. They never intended to phase out gorillas, just adjust to having a new group after the old one dwindled to one individual.

By the way: Does anybody know what happened with the gerenuks? Visited Zoo Miami about 2 weeks ago and their exhibit was empty.

Also I didn't see (or probably oversee) a black duiker or a sign for them? Do they still belong to the collection?
