Qinghai-Tibet Plateau Wildlife Zoo in Xining Zoo news from Xining Zoo

On September 26, 2024, a snow leopard escaped from the Wildlife Rescue and Breeding Center of Xining Botanical Garden (Xining Wildlife Park). Due to the complex terrain and dense vegetation within the park, coupled with the snow leopard's inherently cautious nature and strong hiding abilities, the search efforts have faced certain challenges. Preliminary on-site assessment indicates that the escaped snow leopard remains within the boundaries of the wildlife park. The search operation is currently underway, but no traces of the escaped snow leopard have been found so far. The escaped snow leopard, named "Nao Nao," is an elderly female individual, aged 16.

During the evening search, the snow leopard was found near its enclosure and returned, after the local government reportedly mobilized over 1,000 people for the operation.

Due to the chaos caused by the snow leopard's escape, Xining Zoo was closed for the day. Now that the snow leopard has been recaptured and returned to its enclosure, the zoo stated that it will strive to resume operations tomorrow, though the specific details are still pending further notification.

The zoo completed the renovation of its "Leopard Pavilion" on November 15th this year, which still houses snow leopards and Eurasian lynxes. Overall, it is a significant improvement over the previous facility, though the exhibit space remains somewhat limited. Below are some renderings I took on the 17th.
