A male sun bear has recently arrived and is in the former sloth bear exhibit. This year the zoo will be adding several new species to the collection including bonobos (old chimp exhibit, probably), binturongs and new exhibit for shoebill storks.

They have been planning on getting bonobos for a while, it is very exciting! They've already got the individuals for the new exhibit chosen.

Would that mean they are not planning on getting anymore sloth bears?

The Lowry Park Zoo will re-open June 1. They will limit visitors to 50% overall capacity and 25% capacity in buildings. Six feet of social distance will be required and enforced; a number of other modifications can be found here: ZooTampa plans to reopen June 1 with limited capacity

Babies:
The inca tern pair of the zoo hatched a chick on May 12th and on March 2 Patas monkeys were born. A female named Jolene and a male named Willie.

On April 16th, 2 manatees were released into the wild, including female Evie who was rescued on New Year's Eve after chronic watercraft injuries.

Does anyone know what happened to baby Penda? I went back in July and I noticed she was visibly absent, even though Penzima, Pixie, and Asante were still on display. She's missing from Lowry Park Zoo's website, too, I get the feeling she died.

I didn't even know Ruuxa had leg problems, she looked fine when I visited back in July, even a little energetic around Roxy and Rex.

The names of the Malayan tiger cub, white rhino calf, and tapir calf are out. The rhino calf is a female named Kipenzi. Her parents are Kidogo and Ongava, she is the fourth calf to the pair, and the fifth calf of Ongava. The tapir calf has been named Tengahari, he is the third calf to Ubi and Albert, their second, Tembikai, still lives at the zoo with the three, I don't know when they'll relocate him. The tiger cub is a female, her name is Berisi. She was born to Bzui and Mata, there was a sibling but it died in infancy.

I don't understand fully why the clouded leopard cubs, Aiya and Shigu, are still at Lowry Park Zoo. Most clouded leopard cubs are relocated at six months old, Malee and Yim were, and I'm pretty sure Mowgli was, too.

Exciting birth, the first for the male Johnny and 4th overall for cow Jamie (she has only one surviving calf (bull Jahi at The Wilds).

Can anyone shed any light on what happened in the water birds area of Safari Africa over the years? When it first opened it was super impressive how they had the aviary pond with walk on overlook deck, the shoebill storks, etc. Now that whole area is drained and an overgrown grass mess - no animals at all and the netting for the aviary was removed. Are they planning on putting something there eventually perhaps?

It is really rather sad, it was a impressive immersive tie in from the savanna area to the forest. Also, what is up with the Galapagos tortoises in that section? I feel like that area was better when it opened and has only gone down hill over the years.

I thought it was posted somewhere on the forum that the zoo themselves said they'd be building a new Shoebill aviary.

I would love that, they are my favorite birds from Africa. Hopefully sooner than later, that area looks really bad right now. For such an impressive zoo it really is an eyesore, and the lack of those birds is saddening.

Unfortunately that aviary was a poorly built structure which is why it had to go.

That's too bad, thanks for the info. I hope they update that area, it is looking a bit tired. I am excited to see the changes and updates throughout the zoo.
