Hello everyone and welcome to the inaugural Zoochat Asia Challenge 2025. The format of this challenge is slightly different from the official challenges, in that there is one main challenge, with multiple other challenges on the side at occasional intervals, which are only doable for a short while.

As this year is the year of the snake, according to the Chinese Zodiac, our theme for this challenge is 蛇鼠一窝(she2 shu3 yi4 wo1). If you cannot speak Chinese, this phrase essentially means a nest of scoundrels, but when literally translated, it refers to a nest of snakes and rats. Thus, our year-round challenge will include the following:

Clade Ophidia: ( all snakes)

Pseudopus apodus (not technically a snake but close enough in appearance)

Any species of rodent(rodentia)

Any species of Bettong

Any species of Mouse Lemur

Any Mousebirds

The rules for this challenge are as follows:

1. Players must only be from the continent of Asia.
2. You have to actually see the animal, even if just for a second.

3. Photographic proof is not required; your word is your bond.

4. All entries must be in a numbered list and include the following: the species you’re counting, the day you saw it and the zoo you saw it at.

5. Report your progress on this thread as you go along; do not leave all your updates until the last minute. If you post several months’ worth of updates late in the year, I reserve the right to not count some or all of them. Non-new members waiting until late in the year to join with a high score are, from my POV, doing the same thing and I reserve the right to not count some or all of these late entries also. This is to ensure fairness and transparency for everyone.

6. The taxonomy source we will be using is IUCN. Our unit is species, not subspecies.

7. Violating the rules or participating in unsportsmanlike conduct is grounds for disqualification from this year’s competition and/or from future challenges.

8. The winner will be whoever sees the most of the aforementioned species between January 29th 2025 to 17 February 2026(we're going by the lunar calendar.)

And with that, the challenge begins tomorrow. Until then... let the games begin! But, you know... tomorrow! To any of our illustrious members who are celebrating, wishing you a pleasant New Year!
