Ohio's premiere zoological attraction against a Texas giant, with the most predominate category returning for a fourth time, miscellaneous mammals. Columbus has highlights including koalas and manatees, two very uncommon species. Houston has a dedicated bat cave exhibit and wombats as highlights. Both zoos are lacking a bit in this category, but each have some strengths species wise.

The concept behind this poll is explained here: ZooChat Cup Season 2

Tomorrow: Saint Louis vs Kansas City

Not to dredge up old debates, but for the sake of consistent logic I've re-posted here what I said in Match 5 between Brookfield and Miami:

"In regards to the pangolin debate: for those of you whose vote was affected by your stance on that situation, keep in mind that two other zoos in this competition, Columbus and Memphis, also received pangolins from the same source."

Since the category is miscellaneous mammals (again... *groans audibly*), this information applies.

Though in this case, just for debate purposes, the pangolins are not on exhibit.

While this true, I think Columbus and some of the others are far more excusable in that they did not participate in the mass importing that Brookfield did. Columbus only joined in after Brookfield finally got in a shipment that didn’t all die instantly, and accordingly, Columbus has a much better track record with the species. There is a lack of information about their specimens, considering they still haven’t publicly announced them, but everything seems to have gone well. This fact, along with the fact that they have the best manatee exhibit I’ve ever seen, makes my vote easily go to Columbus.

Yes, I heard about the controversy, but my vote still goes to Columbus because of the fact that it has a variety of marsupials (koala, bettong and tree kangaroo, to be exact) plus manatees. None of my reasons for voting concern pangolins, only the variety of other groups.

Just to clarify, I also did not vote one way or another because of the pangolins and I'm not on one side or the other in that debate generally. I just wanted to make sure everyone was on the same page, in case it was a concern for others.

I just visited Houston a few months ago and, while it's a very solid zoo that'd put up a real fight against almost any zoo in the birds category, I am struggling to remember any miscellaneous mammals there other than Prevost's Squirrel and Harris's Antelope Squirrel. Columbus' excellence has been well-documented here, so despite the pangolin controversy my vote goes to Columbus.
