Zoos and the IUCN Red list

Nice, but the authors ignore (or are unaware of) practical aspects: barriers against zoos getting new species from the wild, veterinary regulations blocking import/export across borders, the lack of expertise and political stability in tropical countries.

It seems a returning theme, that some people idolizebreeding stations for rare species set in their native countries in the tropics. The sad state of most tropical zoological institutions shows that it is wrong approach (even if Western zoos are supporting them). The recent killing of okapis and murdering workers of Okapi Breeding Station is an example.

So you are suggesting that the captive Okapi population would have been better off without the station in Epulu?
