It did, but they have a six month period of appeal during which they can still open to the public. If they do not meet the conditions imposed by the council for a new licence, the council has the right to revoke the zoo licence, therefore the collection can not open to the ublic.

Right... Please can anyone clarify a situation here for me? ... Can anyone tell me why the link shown from the Westmorland Gazette shows an official notification of Ms Karen Brewer applying to take over the Zoo licence, ( application made 3rd Nov, whilst at the same time there is a BBC link on the 8th of November stating quite clearly that Mr David gill is to apply to take the Zoo licence in his name again application made 28th Oct, ( link below) .... also am I correct in believing that as an employee of David Gill, Under the direction order issued by both Barrow B C and DEFRA, any current member of David Gills staff are prohibited from holding this same South Lakes Zoo licence??? Please correct me if im wrong, it just seems very very odd that these two publications come out at exactly the same time??? am I missing something here??? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-cumbria-37914461 Flora Tarr - Flora Tarr added a new photo. | Facebook

Rob, I guess this means that pretty soon the collection will close as Gill c.s. have never resolved any of the management nor husbandry and exhibit issues presented in the Zoo Inspection reports.

I think the biggest problem here is based on the history of over twenty years of countless times of conflict with the council, the planning department etc etc. And each and every time for over TWENTY YEARS, Barrow B C have folded and given in, from the lack of permission with the huge car park he built and loads of buildings up there which D G did with no permission at all a lot having to be retrospective permissions. There is a long history of D G just never having to take any notice of the official departments that usually guide and steer most of us. In a very sad way its sort of a shame because he has gotten away for so long not taking ANY notice of these official requirements that he has simply treat this final era as he has done all of the others... But.. Barrow B C with the backing of DEFRA has quite simply had enough, Now with the death of the keeper B B C are having to watch their step because now they are aware of the state of things up there ( officially ) and cant deflect blame saying " we had no idea " If anything happens up there at all as of now, B B C will have no back door to sneak out of.... Although some of the public opinion is in favour of the Zoo staying open ( at any cost ) if it hits the fan... B B C will be to blame... they know fully the state of things up there with countless reports from people visiting there... The last great hope and lifeline he was given was from David Armitage, he would have been the best thing to happen to that place but from what I hear DG thought he was better than him

and from what ive been told, DA has forgotten more than DG knows, with David Gill telling DEFRA that David Armitage was "old school" and D G said "he had to mentor D A" That last sentence says it ALL about that zoo sadly.

On paper that might look to be the case, but you know the exceptional history here, where nothing seems impossible.

NOW.... Pertinax.......... YOU have just hit the nail RIGHT ON THE HEAD..... The total set up here under normal common sense and normal government rules and laws yes I would agree with Kifaru who said " I guess this means that pretty soon the collection will close as Gill c.s. have never resolved any of the management nor husbandry and exhibit issues presented in the Zoo Inspection reports."..... BUT... As Pertinax infers.... Watch this space because NOTHING is as it seems here...... Watch with interest..... :)

There are two applications for the licence. One from David Gill and another from Karen Brewer. Near identical as far as I can tell.

Did the Lions have cubs this summer? I noticed this posted "from the summer" on a couple of photography forums, but when I went I was told there hadn't been

What bothers me is the difference in the answers to your question Littleredpanda... in your post I am presuming you asked the park staff themselves about the cub... The park themselves say " there hadn't been any" And Nisha says "The cubs didn't survive - sadly not the first litter to perish either". This seems to be the ongoing trend there whereas countless animals seem to be being born up there then just seem to "disappear" ? ( the term countless isnt to infer hundreds, it is jjust to mean no correct record of deaths) It isnt so much the disappearance of these animals its the denial of them even existing. The death of the last Giraffe up there quietly paled into nothing, with no news at all. I would have felt better if the official response from the park was to just say to you, yes there were cub / cubs but they died??? seems very odd to me but... The question then would be.. were the deaths of these animals logged / documented in any way.... Im pretty sure they wont have been. From what ive read, the huge lack of documentation is explained away by the excuse of "missing " paperwork.

Sorry for the misunderstanding, but it was only another visitor, but one who seemed very well informed. Saying that, I remember thinking her response to the question was a little curt compared to the rest of the conversation.

Regarding the licence, it seems that David Gill has applied for a licence as a last ditch attempt. It's unlikely that he will get it so Karen Brewer has also applied for one under the trading name Cumbria Zoo Trading Ltd with its own board of directors which is why they were all removed from the Safari Zoo director list the other month. David Gill is not on the director list of this new company.

CUMBRIA ZOO COMPANY LIMITED - Officers (free information from Companies House)

If in the unlikely event the council put their foot down and remove the license for the zoo, no matte who applies. What is likely to happen to the animals? Could he apply for a DWA license and keep them as a private collection?

Surely the local council have no choice but to refuse a licence if the conditions asked for / stipulated by DEFRA aren't met? To do so would leave the council with no room for error in the event of further accidents there. Surely if the council don't make sure all of the recommendations aren't met they will then be liable in the event of problems there? One of the requirements was for a fully experienced management with no link whatsoever to the present owner. From what I've read neither of the two applicants fulfill these stipulations one of course being David Gill himself? These are actually questions as well if there's any other interpretation of this I'm interested.☺ In answer to your question about the DWA licence I think that having any record whatsoever excludes him from the eligibility of this particular licence. Also it won't be helped by the recent publication of pictures showing his children next to these animals officially categorised dangerous. Also there's one of DG actually riding one of the rhino's.

I've never visited South Lakes, but have followed it's forums with interest since I joined Zoochat.

Time and again, the same question comes to mind: HOW exactly is this place still operating?!?!? Surely any sane council would have shut the place long ago!

Farmer you are thinking like a sensible person, you need to suspend any normal logical thought when dealing with South Lakes zoo and Barrow council. Having the misfortune to live close to this collection the local ****** will fight closure all the way as they think the sun shines out of this guys arse and how he is a credit to the community for having free entry blah blah.

I always wonder how this place stays in buisness, it is free entry majority of the year and his legal bills must be through the roof!

I do think that public feeling towards Gill is cooling. Dalton Zoo is our nearest by far but I know many people who will not set foot in the place because of Gills 'outbursts'.

Both Sri-Lankan Leopards have recently been moved to Terra Natura Murcia in Spain. South Lakes no longer hold the species
