Why should they share it until they are sure it will survive, its far better that they announce things when it is past the 28 day mark, than announcing it day 1 and then 5 days later saying sorry its died!

Ok I agree with you there, but I'd prefer this news after a week at the least, when the large mammals are announced on the day, most of the time, I would very much like the news earlier, I mean the Tuatara as soon as that was bred Chester should have hands high, saying we've done it, not leave it till about half way through January in fairness.
 
Sorry but I believe the zoo is correct to hold off on births, a lot of the zoo animals will have failed pregnancys or early deaths, announcing them too soon and then having to announce the death may give a wrong impression of the zoo from some members of the public.

Also the large animal births are normally announced sooner as these may be harder to keep quiet and out of the public realm, like the zebras giving birth outside during zoo open hours.

Well your first post didn't sound anything like agreeing with me.As for the Tuatara all I will says is PR and it not been a cute Meerkat!
 
with some of the smaller and secretive species the keepers do not always know when they have bred, until the parents and the offspring are seen together.
 
I did manage to catch a glimpse of the baby Philippine mouse deer a couple of weeks ago, but hadn't seen it since. Good that there's now an official announcement and it's doing well rather than getting everyone's hopes up prematurely. Additionally, it's often best to give a youngster and its parents some peace and quiet, rather than have lots of people crowding around.
 
The zoo has announced via Facebook that a baby elephant has been born. Unsure who the mother is but judging from my last visit my money is on Sundara!
 
Lets celebrate in 4/6 years time.

But hopefully a huge step towards securing the future of the herd for decades to come.
 
By chance I visited the Zoo this morning and saw the baby in the paddock at lunch time with whole Hi Way family clustered around and Aung Bo taking an interest, but careful not to get too close. Maya was preoccupied with the hay net of course. The baby was born around 7pm on Friday 16th. I was told that there is video of the birth and one cameraman (presumably from Blast!) was shooting them in the paddock. Perhaps they will splice some shots into the current Channel 4 series, at least as a teaser for a future series - if commissioned. I hope I can post some of my photos tomorrow.
I didn't see too much of the rest of the zoo. The baby chevrotain remained hidden, but its parents were having a go at making another. Most exciting of all, to me, the cock argus pheasant has cleared himself a display area and I saw several of his displays when the hen entered his space. I think I may have some of the very worst photographs ever taken of this spectacle :) but they are still on my card at this moment.
