I love how this argument resurfaces every year on the Big Year threads.
speaking for myself, the only feral bird I count (I think) is feral pigeon just because they are so widespread. But then it was annoying when I saw genuine wild rock doves in Ladakh because they are "the same" as the ferals. In NZ lost of people count feral geese (as "greylag geese"), feral guineafowl, and even feral chickens ("red junglefowl"...).

I think if people want to count feral birds then that's fine, so long as they are actually established ferals and not just the released barnyard ducks at the local pond (for example).

With mammals I count all the ferals - pigs, goats, cats, etc. Last year I counted feral goat on my own year list but not on the Zoochat year list. Hix did count feral goat that year, so I could have done too and then I would have been one species higher.

Added another two birds and a mammal on a walk this afternoon:

70. Common buzzard Buteo buteo
71. Common goosander Mergus merganser

6. Bank vole Myodes glareolus

A morning out at Abberton Reservoir got me nine new birds for the year:

72. Grey heron Ardea cinerea
73. Smew Mergellus albellus
74. Rook Corvus frugilegus
75. Common goldeneye Bucephala clangula
76. Great black-backed gull Larus marinus
77. Northern pintail Anas acuta
78. Gadwall Anas strepera
79. Slavonian grebe Podiceps auritus (Vu)
80. Bewick's swan Cygnus columbianus

Just the one more from today, still no Greylags though....

30. Canada Goose Branta canadensis

I finally got out birding, visiting Wheldrake Ings. Annoyingly, the mist and low light made it very difficult to identify many of the waterfowl and various gulls (probably including a number of vagrants).

31. Eurasian Wigeon Anas penelope
32. Northern Pintail Anas acuta
33. Great Cormorant Phalacrocorax carbo
34. Mute Swan Cygnus olor
35. Common Moorhen Gallinula chloropus
36. Lesser Black-backed Gull Larus fuscus
37. Eurasian Teal Anas crecca
38. Greylag Goose Anser anser
39. Northern Shoveller Anas clypeata
40. Pink-footed Goose Anser brachyrhynchus*
41. Northern Lapwing Vanellus vanellus

*Chances are I have seen this species before, but I have no record of it

I actually went out birding properly today, but unfortunately temperatures had dropped and it was getting down to about -16 which got seriously unpleasant after a couple of hours. A fair few additions nonetheless.

43) Bearded Reedling
44) European Goldfinch
45) Eurasian Siskin
46) Short-toed Treecreeper
47) Marsh tit
48) Common Redpoll
49) Common Kingfisher
50) Hawfinch

Went out again today to another site. Still extremely cold, but managed a few nice species, though missed some birds of prey that I was hoping to get.

51) Rough-legged Buzzard
52) Black Woodpecker
53) Eurasian Bullfinch
