Hello. Does any one know if Spike is on display here? Also, was a calf suppose to be born? Thank you in advance.

Not entirely sure how accurate this is considering their recent acquisition of Spike for the planned start of their breeding program (my understanding is that Spike and Karnaudi have already displayed successful breeding behavior).

I also can't see Calgary sending their elephants to a facility that plans on phasing out their program. The females if you remember were sent to the National Zoo which at the time had recently opened its expanded facility. B.G also meets all of the recently updated AZA standards for managing elephants as far as population and again I can't see a zoo with a breeding group wanting to phase out their program. If you hear anything different i'm interested to hear!

Calagary sank a bit of money into their elephants not that long before they phased out. Breeding behavior doesn't necessarily mean pregnancy and Kaurnadi is s boarder line post repo female. If the phase out happens I'm sure Spike will go to another facility for breeding. Unfortunately no facility is safe from phasing out their elephants. Recent events in the last few years prove that.

Are you even suggesting facilities such as Dallas, North Carolina, Omaha, Animal Kingdom, etc. might face out elephants in the near future?

I've gotten the impression the number of elephant programs for years to come has solidified since so many zoos have invested in new exhibits that cost tens of millions of dollars.

Almost every zoo that has phased out elephants had an outdated facility and usually a severely unsustainable/dysfunctional herd dynamic

I know this is an older thread, but I have found one photo of Karnaudi, she looked pregnant to me but I don’t know. I’m trying to show it but I’m not sure how.

I had the same speculation about Karnaudi being pregnant. Even though Karnaudi is a larger elephant, many photos taken within the last year show Karnaudi with a potential baby bump.

Even The Wildlife Docs addressed the possibility of Karnaudi being pregnant.

However, Busch Gardens Tampa has stated that Karnaudi has reached the age where pregnancy could be hazardous to her health. In addition, the relocation of Spike to the Smithsonian National Zoo indicates that Busch Gardens Tampa has ceased the elephant breeding program for now.

Those were the photos I saw! But could spike have bred with Karnaudi then left so he could breed with Maharani as well?

She will not be having any calves, and Busch gardens elephant breeding program has been placed on a (bar any exceptional events) non breeding oriented future. It was simply too late for this out of condition cow to carry a pregnancy full term, sadly. Her and spike would have had beautiful babies.

Did Spike and Karnaudi successfully bred resulting in Karnaudi becoming pregnant but due to her reproductive age and lack of reproduction Karnaudi miscarried the pregnancy?
