A small group of Scinax alcatraz, a critically endangered frog found only on Alcatrazes island (Southern Brazil), has gone on display. São Paulo have the world's only captive population and have been breeding them well.
 
The Grevy zebra herd at Sao Paulo was assembled from stock from Augsburg (erstwhile male, deceased 2013) and 2 females from Berlin and Leipzig Zoos. I assume the 2 additional females have been selected by the studbook keeper (both International and European) to go to Sao Paulo.
The breeding male is Travao (I suspect this is the male born in 2000).


In other news for January 2017:
3 red-fronted macaw (A. rubrogenys) hatched.
0.0.1+? grey crowned crane (B. regulorum) hatched
(probably just the 1, but could be more chicks)
0.0.1 Chilean flamingo hatched

The flamingo chick is the first in the 40 year zoo's history of keeping flamingos. Several more eggs are yet being incubated artificially. So, there is a possibility that more eggs may hatch before long.

News for December 2016:
The breeding station of the Sao Paulo Zoo at Araçoiaba da Serra (CECFAU – Centro de Conservação de Fauna Silvestre do Estado de São Paulo) reported the first birth of black lion tamarins (Leontopithecus chrysopygus) on October, 27, 2016!!!!!

This follows a general overhaul in husbandry and management of the species which seems to have cracked the nuts on the difficulties' encountered previously to breed the species.

The current number of black lion tamarin at the center is 14.

All bodes well for the future now.

Is ~17 not quite old for the only male founder?

The 2015 Grevy zebra studbook records longevity and the age pyramid shows up individuals right up to 26-28 years of age bracket. A breeding male at 17 is thus mid aged.

Ok, that is good then, although an additional male founder would also be very useful. Is this the start of a managed population in South America, or were there already Grevy's there?
