Much like the owl, these are recent developments - although a lot of "Virginia Opossum" in the private trade are actually misidentified White-eared Opossum so it is quite possible the arrival at Vogelbush Eureka belongs to this taxon.



Conversely, this is one I deliberately omitted - as I have already told you, other than Moscow and one or two other major collections I haven't been counting Russian collections as European for the purposes of this thread.

Given the fact Vladivostok is on the border of North Korea, this applies doubly-so for said collection

American Mourning Dove (Zenaida macroura) - last held at Rotterdam in 1990. The only photographs of this taxon in the Zoochat gallery are of captive and wild individuals in the USA.

Black-chinned Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus leclancheri) - last held at Tierpark Berlin in 2013. Although relatively common in European collections in the timespan concerned, the only photographs of this taxon posted to the Zoochat gallery have been of captive individuals in the Philippines and USA.

Eastern Lesser Bamboo Lemur (Hapalemur griseus) - last held at Port Lympne in 2013. Finding images of this taxon is complicated by the fact that for the final few years of this holding, the final individual was held in a mixed-exhibit with the very similar Western Lesser Bamboo Lemur. However, some photographs of the individual in question are present in the Zoochat gallery, for instance:

White-bellied Spider Monkey (Ateles belzebuth) - last held in 2007 at Omega Parque Jardim Zoologico. The only images of this taxon on the Zoochat gallery are of captive individuals in South America.

White-throated Guenon (Cercopithecus erythrogaster) - this taxon may still be present at the last collection to hold the species; however, as the individual concerned has been offshow for several years it is difficult to say for certain.

Agile Mangabey (Cercocebus agilis) - last held in 2015 at Dierenpark Wissel. The individuals concerned *may* still be present elsewhere in Europe subsequent to the closure of Wissel, but at the present time their location is unknown.

Tana River Mangabey (Cercocebus galeritus) - last held in 1995 at Ingolstadt Kleinzoo. No images of this taxon have been posted to the Zoochat gallery.

Assam Macaque (Macaca assamensis) - last held in 2011 at Bioparco di Roma. A single image of the final individual in Europe - along with what was at the time the final individual of Northern Pig-tailed Macaque in Europe - has been posted to the Zoochat gallery:

Another new arrival, and a very pleasing one - they arrived shortly before my June 2016 visit to the collection and as such I will be able to fill the gap in the gallery myself!

Actually, the individual now at Port Lympne arrived since my quoted post - although the species was never truly lost from Europe as the individual in question had previously been misidentified as Western at Banham.

The White-bellied Spider Monkeys at Reaseheath are another example of re-identification, as it happens, having previously been claimed to be Geoffroy's Spider Monkey.

Let's see....

Five collections in Europe hold the *other* species commonly called White-throated Guenon - C. albogularis - but the taxon discussed in this thread is no longer present in European collections.

The Agile Mangabey at the collection you cite are the very individuals which I discussed in my post, and which as I noted at the time would almost certainly pop up elsewhere in time.

The Tana River Mangabey at Nikolaev was listed as a former holding of Agile Mangabey for a long time - it appears someone has added it as a current holding once again further to EARZA annual reports, and as Tana River.

I don't count Sochi so Assam Macaque is still absent.

Another new arrival - as I noted in the original post this species is not uncommon in private hands so given this is the main source of Donnersberg's stock it is unsurprising they now keep the species.

Kellen`s Dwarf Dormouse (Graphiurus kelleni) - last held at Chester Zoo in 2013. There are no photographs of this taxon on the Zoochat gallery, although I am certain it will have been photographed by members of this site

Plaintain Squirrel (Callosciurus notatus) - last held at Budapest in 2012. There are a number of photographs of this taxon on the Zoochat gallery, including the following image from Stuttgart:

Perny's Long-nosed Squirrel (Dremomys pernyi) - last held at Plzen in 2014. There are no images of this taxon on the Zoochat gallery.

Kellens dwarf dormouse held at Plzen and Prague also a zoo in Germany and in Britain plaintain squirrel held at Wingham wildlife park the long nosed squirrel is held at kleindierpark in the Netherlands

Common Yellow-toothed Cavy (Galea musteloides) - last held at Plzen in 2007. There are no images of this taxon on the Zoochat gallery, although one image of Munster Yellow-toothed Cavy has been mislabelled as this taxon.

Black Agouti (Dasyprocta fuliginosa) - last held at Kilverstone in 1992. The only image of this taxon in the Zoochat gallery is of a captive individual in South America, although a number of images of a misidentified Mexican Agouti at Madrid have been posted under this name.

Northern Mountain Viscacha (Lagidium peruanum) - this taxon is possibly still held at Tierpark Schönebeck; however due to the age of the last individual at the collection it is possible that the species has disappeared from Europe within the last 12 months. The last certain record of the taxon at this collection as far as I know was in 2014.

The Kellen's Dwarf Dormouse is largely another example of misidentification - all of the listings you refer to pertain to animals incorrectly labelled as Graphiurus parvus.

The Plantain Squirrel at Wingham is a new arrival, as is the Long-nosed Squirrel at Kleindierpark.

The Yellow-toothed Cavy is allegedly a new arrival, but I suspect it is actually a misidentified Muenster Yellow-toothed Cavy.

The Black Agouti at the two collections you cite are new arrivals, but I am given to understand that - like the Mexican Agouti also at Donnersberg - there is some doubt about the identity of these animals. Donnersberg does have a track record for misidentifying their stock as rarer species; they claim to hold Pichi but I am reliably informed that the animals in question are leucistic Screaming Hairy Armadillo

If you have actually read the thread - or indeed the post you were actually quoting from - you will note that the continued presence of Northern Mountain Viscacha at Schoenebeck has already been discussed; that said, given the lifespan of the species I suspect if the last survivor is indeed still present, this will not be the case for long considering the group which left Hamerton for said collection in 2014 were geriatric at the time!

Red-throated Bee-eater (Merops bulocki) - last held at Dvur Kralove in 2003. The only images of this taxon on the Zoochat gallery are of a wild individual in Africa, and captive individuals in a European private collection.

African Pygmy Kingfisher (Ispidina picta) - last held at Frankfurt in 2008. Despite being held in many European collections over the timespan in question, only a single image of this taxon in Europe has been posted to the Zoochat gallery, a photograph taken in 1988 at Walsrode:

Greater Bird-of-Paradise (Paradisaea apoda) - this taxon was last held in 2008 at Walsrode. There are numerous photographs of this taxon in the Zoochat gallery, including this image of the final individual in Europe:

Bornean Peacock-pheasant (Polyplectron schleiermacheri) - this taxon was last held in 2011 at Highland Wildlife Park, where a number of pairs were quarantined off-show on behalf of the World Pheasant Association. There are no images of this taxon within the Zoochat gallery.

Rain Quail (Coturnix coromandelica) - this taxon was last held in 2012 at Plzen. There is a single image of this taxon within the Zoochat gallery, a photograph taken of the last individual in Europe:

Both new arrivals from private hands in 2016 to the best of my knowledge; the Peacock-pheasant may even comprise some of the individuals imported several years ago which I mentioned in the original post.

Once again, this is an example of why it is important to check the taxonomic name I wrote and not merely the common name - the Parrotlet to which you refer is Forpus spengeli and *not* Forpus cyanopygius, which is the one mentioned in this thread.

The Conure is a recent arrival, having returned to public display in late 2015.

As the person who discovered the Plantain Squirrel at Wingham, I can definitely tell you they were a new arrival after TLD had his post.

That said, while you're certainly going about your "corrections" in the most obnoxious way possible (don't worry, he won't read this), this does point out perhaps a need to go through and update this thread. Personally, I'm pretty excited to see how many species have returned to public collections recently!

This being something I planned on doing in any case as reflected in my post a few weeks ago when I highlighted some of the most notable species to be lost since I started this thread. To that end I have actually been thinking of uploading one or two of my shots of Black-chinned Fruit Dove from Walsrode to fill the gap noted in this thread, now the species has returned to Europe.

As I noted in this post from a few weeks ago, there have been at least 18 notable species lost since I started this thread, even without checking the most speciose groups such as parrots, pigeons and passerines; that said, I will check those groups too - along with any others I didn't check at the time for the sake of sanity I can think of another species which we have learned has been lost since I wrote that post, too:

Checkered Elephant Shew (Rhynchocyon cirnei) was last held at Plzen in late 2016 or early 2017, with a small number of photographs displaying the taxon found within the Zoochat gallery, including the following image:



That one stings somewhat given I missed the species at Tierpark Berlin due to the new director cancelling the then-imminent plans to place that very individual on display immediately before my visit in 2014 and even moreso given the fact I will be visiting Plzen in a few months!
