South Lakes Wild Animal Park Safari Zoo 2017 news

Bet your life she was. There's an inspection today and tomorrow. 13th and 14th. Just talking to someone last night on this and the scenario of the zoo "satisfying" this latest inspection. Would the fact that despite the "new" management still being the old management, some for 10 years along side David Gill, Would that effect the "new" management getting the next licence. Would the history of running the place with D G and alongside D G, effect the chances of the licencing committee granting a new licence ? interesting. have just been sent this.... http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/te...s/news-story/2b69990ed88ba907b09c714679b8fb92 how very similar.. GOOGLE ...animal keeper faces animal cruelty charges Australia daily telegraph

"It was opened in 2004 as the Mareeba Wild Animal Park after numerous problems surrounding its finance and construction.

Less than a month later the zoo was closed with $3 million of debt, and founder David Gill, was charged. A cheetah and a lemur had escaped from their enclosures and others had died.

Over the next two years the zoo remained in administration, over which time nine lions escaped from their cages."

Paging Matt Damon or Benjamin Mee: Cairns zoo, along with its animals, up for sale

just a thought about the free entry , i wonder if the members have been refunded in anyway ? , not that i would want to visit free or not

What bothered me morally, is up until very recently even during the likely to fail licence applications and the probable "closure" notice that has now been issued by the council, Annual family passes were still being sold without the fore warning of the up and coming applications. Not too sure if they are still selling them right now. If they are that is really morally bad though probably totally legal.

What happens next if this new management team are also refused a zoo licence, will the place be closed down altogether or could it be sold to a person or company who could run it better?

Thats the whole problem here. in no way will David Gill ever sell, we have heard two offers to buy from different companies have been made but he will never ever sell.

I forgot to add in my last post, The term "New" management isn't the case because the people in this instance are exactly the same people that have been working for / with David Gill some for the last 10 years and were sometimes in charge when D G was away. the only new thing is the name.

if that really is the case for the animals sake the place needs to be closed immediately

The only answer now is to shut the place, and quick, dragging it on and on helps nobody. Obviously it will be hard for the keepers, and the animals to be relocated, but I can`t see any other realistic outcome.

It would be good if this could be wrapped up quickly. The vultures are circling with the hope that this can be the example that leads to the closure of all UK zoos. I had this email from CAPS today.

Licence refused for South Lakes Safari Zoo
- but the animals are not safe yet

Please take action before the 24th March to help them

Dear Supporter,

As you may have heard already, it is with cautious relief that I tell you that the council unanimously decided to refuse the Zoo Licence application from David Gill for South Lakes Safari Zoo. I have been wanting to update you sooner but the past weeks have continued to be non-stop, dealing with press and queries.

On the day of the hearing, we were there to present our case against this licence application. It was sad and frustrating to hear from zoo inspectors how much the animals had suffered at this zoo. To hear the decision to refuse was exhilarating and a big relief.

But soon after the joy, I realised that this was not the real battle - the animals are not safe yet. We have a much tougher fight on our hands.

A second zoo licence application has been submitted for Cumbria Zoo Co. Ltd. to take over the zoo. We must stop this application being granted!

At least some of the key management who are named under Cumbria Zoo Co Ltd were in similar roles at South Lakes Safari Zoo. They have been involved over the years when serious welfare concerns and deaths have taken place. How can they then be considered to take over the zoo?

Please donate now to fight for a better future for the animals at the zoo

We have less than two weeks to submit our report against this recent application, to try to convince the zoo to refuse it and shut the zoo down for good.

We are sure you agree that we should give the animals the chance to live out the best lives possible going forward, not to be used in some kind of experiment to see if the next owner can do a better job.

Please, if you can, donate before the 24th March so we can prepare the strongest possible case against this company who want to continue to exploit animals for profit.

The ultimate question is, what is best for the animals? Haven't they been through enough? We think so. This zoo needs to be closed once and for all so please help if you can.

Best wishes,

P.S. The animals are not safe yet, the zoo could remain open if we don't take action! Please donate before the 24th March so we can present the best case for the animals to have this zoo closed down for good. Thank you.

*David Gill has 28 days to appeal against the licence refusal decision and to appeal against the Zoo Closure Direction Order - so the zoo remains open until his appeal is resolved.

If Mrs Gill is the veterinarian then ...

It's hard to convince that it's genuinely a new and different set-up.
She was the veterinarian for the zoo for some years but it turned out that she didn't have the full qualification MRCVS that is applicable to this country. so she was told to cease the practice on animals here in the UK. She practiced for a short time in Peru I think but then stopped for quite a few years before coming here. She also did the postmortem's for a couple of years on the Zoo animals of Gills. before the stop.

that email just really begs the immediate question of where the animals are to go (obviously to other zoos) but what happens to the animals if all the zoos are closed as CAPS wishes. I wonder what they would say if you asked them. "To sanctuaries"? "Released back to the wild"?

The whole South Lakes debacle is a godsend for the anti-captivity brigade.
