ZSL Whipsnade Zoo Whipsnade zoo 2017

I thought the idea was to mix the male Onager with the two females. I remember seeing two out in the paddock and one in the yard.

Thanks for the clarification; I thought you meant mixing the onagers with another species.

On all my Whipsnade visits last year, the male onager was separated from the two females; normally the stallion seemed to be confined to the hardstand while the two females were out in the paddock (although sometimes it was the other way round).

I think it's great the Gaur will go there, they will look awesome in there. I guess the housing may have to be re-done?

Maybe the current Gaur paddock will hold another Greater One Horned Rhino?

The female hunting dogs arrived from London last week, and have quickly settled in!

Female Wolverine Pigh has passed away through old age.

That will likely be the case, to allow all three of the normal rhino groupings (Hugo, Beluki, Behan and Bali) to have some space from one another.

I thought as much! When I was at London on Sunday I could only count eight dogs!

Hi new here :)
Does anyone know what plans they have for the meerkats as down to just 2 females now?

Personally, I would go out of meerkats and replace them with a more endangered or rare mongoose species.

The plan is to increase the group with stock from London. There are also plans to increase the size of the enclosure.
What irritates me is that everyone thinks Whipsnade need to lose species to get new species! It's the largest zoo in the country, with plenty of space! Why the need to let the wolves die off before adding hunting dogs? There's plenty of room around the Lions for 3 or 4 new small mammals!
Bad news on the female wolverine as it's an excellent enclosure, I hope she can be replaced!
They don't need to get rid of onager to free up space either! Though I would suggest part of that massive paddock could be used for a carnivore and still be large enough for onager, gaur or any other hoofstock

Can I suggest we don't get bogged down on this here? Maybe it would be best to start another thread perhaps?

No need to start a new thread as far as I'm concerned, it was just an observation that people think species need to be replaced rather than new ones brought in extra, it's a fact there's plenty of space to make the zoo better!

Does the zoo plan to breed the impala, kudu and the other antelopes in the future?

The first time there have been Hunting Dogs at Whipsnade since ..... ? (insert year)

The last time that there were hunting dogs at Whipsnade was back in 1986.

The hunting dogs then were housed in the old hyaena cages which were situated just inside the entrance to what is now the Asian drive-through enclosure.

There was a time in the 1960s when this row of cages housed spotted hyaena, striped hyaena and brown hyaena in adjacent cages.

(I wish Whipsnade still had three species of hyaena!)
