Does anybody think/know if the zoo will reveal it's long term development plans in the near future? Would be great to know what's next on the agenda after the expansion of islands. It's rather frustrating how secretive they seem to be about putting any sort of news out there that hasn't occurred months previously.

Thanks for all your respones

Jaguars - Napo and Goshi will be allowed to breed in the future (when the studbook gives them a recommendation)

Ok, I'm going to sound like a numpty now. How do they prevent them from breeding? Do they separate them while she's in season, or is is on the cat equivalent of the pill?

This is a longstanding problem in zoos. I agree that Chester probably needs more personnel in areas like this because so many people are arriving at weekends, even at this time of year. But I feel that any visitor ought to take that an initiative if they see it happening - I find that a quiet, polite request such as 'Please, don't do that' usually works nicely (older members may remember Joyce Grenfell's patient rebuke to young George) - as a retired teacher I have just the right tone and manner to do this, but I realise that some people might be reluctant to get involved in this way.

I wish I had the confidence to. I've just found in the past I'm the kind of person that tends to be ignored. Or I become invisible! It's like I'm not even there.
Just a shame that when the glass at the Jags is busy, it can be 3 deep with the whole area full so it's not easy to get to the front. Same thing happens at the Orangutans at the Islands, but they've normally got the person counting them near by lol

I doubtt it, they never let the Members know what is going on.

I believe that both have implants to prevent them from breeding

My guess is that the main focus at the moment is finishing all the work that is currently under way. Ideally some of it should be ready by Easter, bird flu restrictions permitting, and most by the end of June. Then detailed plans for the next projects will be drawn up for approval in the planning process, when they will be available to the public.

Thanks GL! I was meaning more long term as in a 5 year plan or something similar? As they did with the natural vision proposes. I know they are geographically relocating and concentrating the collection however they don't divulge much at all as in the bigger picture :( like will they be demolishing the old ape house eventually? Building new chimp enclosures? Knocking down the tropical house etc etc

They are not geographical zoning they are zoning by types of area like grassland and forest but there will be a degree of geographical zoning in each area.

Any idea who Zuri (black rhino) mated with ? Magadi or Kifaru ? SLOTZ last night showed Kifaru mixed/mating with Malindi, it would be great if both Malindi and Kitani were pregnant to continue Chester`s excellent breeding program, fingers crossed

I think the plan was to get Kifaru II to mate with both Zuri and Malindi but that may have changed

There are no plans to reopen the library. It was not used much.

How long ago did the library close? I used some of the resources last year, it was open on weekdays at that point if my memory serves me correctly.

Something which I rather suspect was very much due to the fact that the zoo pretty much kept the existence of the library very quiet indeed!

Once upon a time the library even appeared on the map, back when the map was useful.
