I know and I fully agree with you, but I find it comical that this one enclosure took so long to build. Fortunately a lot of other building has taken place in the meantime, making artis more attractive every year. I hope they start with the small mammal house soon, though elephants and aquarium probably have priority. .
 
For all: Listed building status for a zoo means that a lot of development needs to be reviewed by outside bodies often with - debatable - knowledge of animal management and husbandry and zoo exhibitry, hence everything is a challenge.

Aside both Amsterdam and Rotterdam zoos are Municipality administered and thus are not Zoological Society owned nor do they own the land nor buildings on site. This in turn makes it even more difficult to improve and expand the zoo(s) to take them into the modern global zoo community, let alone into the 22nd Century!

Mes Cheres @lintworm and @vogelcommando, I cannot divulge on the forum the rationale behind the delay in completing the jaguar exhibit, nor will I do so. You may learn more if and when you visit the zoo some time after December 20th this year on site (or as per PM hence I will hold you both to confidentiality ... forthwith).

Zoo news:
The Diana monkeys have been introduced in the Gorillahouse and may now be seen more frequently by visitors.

Also, eider ducks have been introduced to the sea lion pool (previously black-footed penguin were introduced too).
 
Great news, and kudos for Artis for trying to provide suitable habitat in a small zoo.

However, crocodiles are long-lived but produce large clutches, so perhaps are best moved on a temporary breeding loan to perfect exhibits where breeding was successful. One good enclosure can serve many pairs over subsequent years. Too many individuals of rare crocodilians don't contribute to the breeding pool. What do you think?
 
For 2 weeks a Griffon vulture hatched at Artis and now a second chick hatched. This second one is quite special. The egg was found in the middle of the aviary and placed in an incubator. During the time in the incubator 2 male Griffon vultures fel in love and the egg was given to this male-pair.
Now it has hatched and hopefully the 2 fathers will proof to be good parents :) !

This is such an improvement on the old set up which was rather bland, any one know what the brown structure in the back is? looks like an aviary or ape enclosure.
 
Bland is not the wording I would use for a historical zoo full of exhibits with a listed building status. It is both a question of cultural heritage commission overseeing what can and cannot be done, the process makes for far more expensive investment in renovation or remodeling these along with a serious reduction in species.

Re: that structure you seem to mistake for an aviary or ape enclosure in background is actually the skeletal remains of the former Carnivore House from the late 19th century and rebuilt in 1900's …, which quite recently - well a year or so ago - was demolished to make way for expansion of the Pachyderm House into the former Carnivore building and parking space and enable the zoo to maintain both a family group in a good yard of their own (in the new area) and a bull elephant for breeding in t he old outside yard.
 
I think you have mistaken my meaning KB I meant the old elephant enclosure was bland, I used to visit the zoo at least once a year between 1982 and 1999, more than I have visited any other zoo other than my local colchester one. I loved it, especially the old aquarium with it's amphib collection, and the reptile house, all of which got me into keeping species myself. As well as the out door orang. space, also the then new gorilla enclosure, which was a great improvement on the old indoor only house. I also loved the large aviary by the cafe near the entrance. I wasn't so struck with the then old brown bear grotto. My last visit was shortly after the extension for zebra and wilderbeast had opened near the big new restaurant. Of course a lot will have happened in the last 18 or so years, as you say larger enclosures mean less space for other exhibits.
Does the new pachyderm house still house parrots or has that idea been abandoned?
