The current bull and the two females are Rothschild's giraffes (hybrids), the new two young females comming to Vienna are reticulated giraffes.
The new giraffe enclosure/house will house also hornbills,
helogales, gerrhosauridae and tockus.
It would seem that they will leave the bull Kimbar at the outplacement site till his eventual passing. Perhaps there is a chance that the other unknown/hybrid females will transfer back to the zoo (allthough I currently interpret the press releases as reading that they are to stay there as well to accompany the bull). For sure now, the 2 unknown/hybrid females will no longer be allowed to breed (and perhaps they have been put on the pill or implanted).
The male can't bred naturally, because he is almost blind. Only one option is left to breed with this pair , A.I. But this worked only two times successfully in the Usa.Altough I don't like this way of"reprodcution"-, it is the only chance to bred with this indeed very important pair. Or the swap of the females, there are some genetic precious bulls in europe - from the Whipsnade line for example.
Tiergarten Schonbrunn is currently upgrading the Hippo outdoor enclosure, it will be enlarged from about 850 square meters to 1000 square meters. Additionally the pool will be tripled in size and include underwater viewing.
New arrivals in the monkey house are White-faced saki.
Pictures of the hippo enclosure renovation, the new East Africa house, Giraffe indoor enclosure + a whole bunch of enclosure photos were just uploaded to the gallery: Tiergarten Schönbrunn | ZooChat
The next construction work will be an aviary for Swift parrot at the place of the Nutria enclosure (next to the Rhino at the smaller entrance), the Nutria have already left, but construction has not started yet.
