Had a visit today and here are a couple of recent developments:
-The Bongo have moved into the old Oryx enclosure, leaving there old enclosure empty.
-The Giant Anteater has now been given access to the Capybara enclosure, some of the younger Capybara have been moved into the Tapir enclosure.
-The part of the Dart Frog vivs which had the Amazon Tree Boa is now being refurbished. The area behind that viv is still awaiting a new animal in it. The old Parsons Chameleon exhibit is also still being refurbished.
-The Tsavo aviary is open again
-There has been a reshuffle where the rhinos are kept; The small house has Kifaru II in, Ema Elsa and Gabe are now in the old Rhino house, Zuri and Kitani are in the Tsavo roundhouse, Magadi,Embu and Malindi are now kept in the off-show house.
-The species in the new Invert areas in the Monsoon Forest are Walking Stick Insect, Sulawesi Stick Insect, Orchid Mantis,Touch Me Not Stick Insect, Malaysian Jungle Nymph, Malaysian Dead-Leaf Mantis,Giant Walking Leaf, Rhinoceros Beetle (No idea what type) and Bloody Mary Shrimp.
-The fossil dig area has now gone and the mesh fence for the Lions next to the courtyard is blocked up, making viewing possible from only by Oakfield Manor and the new PLAY! area.
-Some telegraph poles have been added to outdoor Sloth enclosure and is starting look more ready for it inhabitants.
The work on the new Islands area is looking great; The new aviary is netted over and mock rock is being added, The Tapir pool is coming along nice as well and poles have been added to the Sun Bear/Binturong enclosure, my jaw dropped when I saw the height of them!
-And finally, a couple of weeks ago young adult male Iznee who was born at the zoo in 2009 passed away.
That's all great news MagpieGoose! Except about Iznee, he shall be missed :(
I admit that I am rather disappointed about the new invertebrate enclosures having mainly just stick insects/mantids as they can be seen in quite a few different locations around the zoo but I guess beggars can't be choosers. Does the original invert exhibit still have anything in it?
I am however, very excited about the Islands progression. Let's hope that it is finished by the set date! :)

any idea on the latin name of any of those stick insect species? And Water Dragon I love the range of different stick insect species on show at the zoo, but I guess I am a Phasmid fanatic- I suppose they must all seem pretty same-y to many people.

They were labelled as:
Walking Stick Insect- Myronides .ssp peleng
Sulawesi Stick Insect- Pamulus .ssp Sulawesi
Touch Me Not Stick Insect- Epidares nolimemtangere
Chester are starting to have a nice little on-show invertebrate collection- of coarse no match for the one at Bristol

Oh no, I love phasmids and I work with many different species of them. I was just hoping for a little more of a variety of invertebrates that we havn't seen yet.

sorry read that they had blocked the path off, I see from the picture the have just block the view into the enclosure.

Thanks to some species identification from @gentle lemur I can now also say that the Invert areas also hold Betta pallifina and Parosphromenus linkei

Very nice and specific then in other words you are guessing then??
The polite term is estimation. We all know it won't happen in May, and we all know it ought to happen before early July; so a date in June seems reasonable. Having visited the zoo on both Saturday 13th and Saturday 20th (I'm a glutton for punishment :)), I can say that significant progress had been made in that week, and that men were working with diggers and bulldozers on both days, so I estimate that the work will be complete in the second half of June. But the plants and animals will need a little time to settle and there is always a chance that bad weather could cause delays.
