Korat Zoo Review of the Korat Zoo - 17 May 2017

Large-spotted civet ?!?! wow! One of the species I most want to see; since it is a tropical lowland specialist, the extinction of it within China is unavoidable. How many individuals do they have? Besides this zoo I only know Chiang Mai Zoo have one individual.

There's an image on Wikipedia labelled as this species at Saigon Zoo in 2014 as well.

I only saw one, although there may have been other individuals. I didn't take any photos in the house because of lower light levels, but as it happens this individual was the animal I saw best in there because it was sleeping right at the glass.

I've uploaded the few photos I have to the gallery - Korat Zoo - Photo Galleries | ZooChat

I really wish I'd had more time to get a much better representation of the zoo, but that's life. Hopefully I'll be back one day.

There are some other photos in the gallery from Jackwow as well, including the lovely African elephants stained brick-red from the soil here.

Why do they have African Elephants and not Asian? Are there many other African Elephants in South-East Asia?

I have no idea. It does seem a little odd. I have seen African elephants in Asia before - Colombo Zoo in Sri Lanka has one, and there are some in India and China. I can't recall off the top of my head if I've seen any in southeast Asia though.

Here they list Spotted Linsang for this zoo. Anyone know if they still have 'em?
I'm pretty sure they don't. The nocturnal house does not appear to exist any more, and there definitely wasn't a linsang with the other small carnivores. The Thai Zoos site isn't particularly up to date.
