Okapi Shomari has moved to Dublin it seems.
Great!! Must be down to 2 now then! Possibly YET another significant species could be lost from Marwell!
Just a few years ago they had 7 okapi! This really will be the final straw for me if they give up on okapi along with everything else!
I couldn't care less about the tropical house compared to the rest of the gloom that hangs around the place!

As for okapi at Marwell Zoo: it seems they have not done so well over the years. Reasons behind why they have not I do not know nor can I speculate (the set up of the house have always seemed to me well designed for them).
But it is probably a given that the studbook keeper / species coordinator has taken note (and may have decided to transfer out / place individual okapis elsewhere.
You might not like it @pipaluk, but there is no denying that perhaps time may be up.
Were unlucky with the female that died last year that was pregnant still hope the pair left stay.
Wich female died last year? Hazina or Elila. And is the male still Jamar?
The female who died would have been Dumela. The current pair should be Jabari and Daphne. The female Elila died at London in 2014 and Hazina should now be at Wroclaw.
Part of the reason why the okapi at Marwell have dwindled is due to the fact that three pro-okapi senior Marwell staff members have left since the days when they had a good number and they were breeding them. Sadly there is no longer anyone there who is keen on keeping the okapi anymore.
Sadly there is hardly anyone there who wants to keep anything remotely rare as far as I can see!! More meerkat, ring tailed lemur & Bennetts wallaby enclosures to follow I fear!
Well over half of the mammal species at Marwell now are in non breeding or single sex groups.There are plans for a new Amur Leopard enclosure for the future either on the same site or elsewhere at Marwell.
That doesn't surprise me in the slightest, an expensive new enclosure for one existing species whilst several others will be lost in the next year! The same old story! Marwell just gets worse every year!
