Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo news 2017 #2

Another orangutan baby for Twycross zoo - what a great day!

Footage of the Orangutan baby that was born earlier today at the Twycross Zoo in Atherstone, England! The mother still licking the placenta that is lying next to her. Licking the blood of her fingers. Then stroking the newborns baby's hand, caressing her and cuddling her.
I've got a video if anybody is interested. As I'm not allowed to post the link - go to my profile and click homepage! Or visit my YouTube channel: SloggerVlogger
That's Kibriah! Good to see shes had another baby hopefully this obe survives

I'll be visiting Twycross for the first time on Monday (on my way to Chester), could anyone recommend how long you need there? It's a 4 hour drive there... would 4-5 hours at the zoo be enough?

Also is there any hidden gems that are a must see?
I'm really looking forward to seeing Tywcross' ape collection, hopefully they're active in the afternoon :D

4-5 hours should be plenty. Gems are the last Crowned Guenon in Europe in the enclosure near the marmoset / tamarin house, Lowe's guenon in one of the old Chimp enclosures near the meerkats ( edit I don't think it is an ex Chimp cage before anyone corrects me, but the Siamang one near it was). Yellow-throated marten, tufted deer, agile gibbon ( not common in Uk anyway), striped hyaena and several of the monkeys are not particularly common in the UK

The orangutans, gorillas, bonobos and small group of chimps (in the Complex) are easy enough as their indoors are all onshow. The large group of chimps is harder as they have two outdoor runs and no access to the indoors. Be at their enclosure for between 4-5 (maybe a bit before that time period just in case) and they get fed around then. You should see all 13 of them outside at that.

Thank you! All of these sound very interesting to me :D

This is great information to know, thank you! :)

Thanks Nisha. The keeper I got the info from couldn't pronounce the name of the zoo :D

I noticed cars/vans from Chester, Dudley, Newquay and another zoo (can't remember which) in their car park today.

That might have something to do with a ZIMS training course being run. Could it have been Bristol

I found out the Striped Hyena left for the Czech Republic last Friday. Her enclosure has a notice saying "look out for new species soon!"
Not great news, after the loss of Dhole this year too, whatever the species, I expect it will be something more common than striped hyaena!

I know you don't like zoos losing species, but isn't this good news? I mean, the hyaena is being sent into a breeding situation (presumably, given that Dvur Kralove also obtained a male), instead of just sitting there being "wasted" at Twycross.

Could well have been :)

The keeper did say she was off to breed

The sun has been out but have the gibbons? are they using the islands yet or do they remain resolutely indoors?

Only tangentially related, but I saw the other ex-Twycross hyena in the Czech Republic today :p she seemed well.

Possibly, but it always seems to be the zoos that I visit that are sending species away rather than gaining mates for their animals!

Last Wednesday, the young Agile Gibbon was out most of the afternoon I was there and all the Siamang for a little time. I think the younger Pleated Gibbons have moved on as I only saw the adults and I haven't seen them come out at all. Yesterday, the White Cheeked family sat in the hatches for periods, but didn't come out while I was there.

Quite happy she is in a breeding situation now.

Also: the enclosure she was in was not the greatest either! So, am glad zoo management has decided otherwise, is looking into bringing in a new (???) species and hopefully will renovate or remodel the exhibit accordingly.

That's if she's still young enough. She has been at Twycross a long time now though don't know her exact age. However its worth a shot and better to have her paired than stay on alone at Twycross. The enclosure would really be suitable for something a little smaller perhaps-though amazingly it used to hold the Lions!
