I am not sure, whether I am right here, but I will need the help of this collection of Zoo specialists...

In the moment, I am trying to collect Information about the elephant seals that have been kept in captivity around the world so far.

Just trying to have the Information as complete as possible for an article, which can be published in a Zoo Magazine in Germany.

So, if you have photos, names, periods of keeping or anything else, please let me know!

Thank you in advance

Tim

Some of my photos from our Gallery, some details in the Comments. I may be able to supply further details and larger versions of the photos if required.

I also have photos from Rotterdam in 1972 or 1973 - including ones of a female and of a keeper feeding a half-grown animal, encouraging it to bend its back so its head approached its tail.

The Pittsburgh zoo and ppg aquarium currently houses a juvenile male northern elephant seal and is currently one out of like two or three in captivity

I've moved the thread to the General forum where it will be seen by more people. (The Help and Feedback part of the forum is just for issues to do with using the forum, and not many people will see your thread there).

I also added a descriptive line to the title to attract anybody who has information.

Here are some past threads which you may want to read for information:

Pinniped species in captivity?

Elephant seals in captivity.

Elephant Seal ... Your last time?

There are still Elephant Seals in captivity.

I don't know if that is the case, but according to Baidu, beijing zoo have got elephant seal in the 80s.

That one infamous bucket seal meme from 2008(?) or so features a captive elephant seal named Minazo at the Enoshima Aquarium. The pictures were taken around 2004 and he passed away in 2005.

If you're interested in recording all the zoos that have ever kept elephant seals bear in mind that, according to ZooTierliste, five UK collections once held southern elephant seal.

However, although not detailed on Zootierliste, it should be noted that Southampton Zoo also had a number of elephant seals; once six specimens were held there simultaneously!

The elephant seals at Southampton Zoo were generally only kept on a temporary basis until they were sold to other zoos.

Thank you for your help so far, much appreciated.

Regarding Gentle Lemur´s photos, I would be very interested in all you have...

Also a big thank you to Chlidonias for moving my question to the right place, I wasn´t sure, where I´ll have to put it... ;)

Southampton and Bejing were blank spots on my elephant seal map until know, if someone has more Information, don´t hesitate to contact me!

I would love to see any photos of the 3 Southern elephant seals held at Taronga during the 80's
