Any word on the zoo's plans regarding keeping pr transferring the Asian female elephants?

I don't know what their plans are, but I noticed that the last time I was there (January 2017) that the Asian elephants were no longer listed on the zoo map (although they are still at the zoo).

In the zoo's Facebook post about the elephant move they confirm that the old Asian elephant exhibit will be modified and become an Indian rhino exhibit.

As much as I like Indian rhinos, I wonder why they aren't renovating the area into an improved habitat for the Malayan tapirs - if they're still present at the zoo?

I think that they have one elderly Malayan tapir left. They are rebuilding much of their Asia area with new tiger and sloth bear exhibits. I wonder if an expanded or new tapir exhibit will be part of it? It is supposed to be completed in 2019 so they will likely be releasing plans for it at some time in the near future.

@DAVID, I look forward to those plans. For the lone elephant female Shaunzi her move to LA Zoo was the best possible solution to be found and I do hope they find sufficient rationale (as well as having the funds available) to kick-start the proposed Asian development.

EDIT: the full species listing for the new Asia precinct is: Apart from GOHR, tiger (unsure whether Siberian or S.E. Asian), sloth bear, orang utan, Komodo dragon, fruit bats and rhinoceros hornbill.

Any idea on the full set up of species planned for the new Asia precinct (apart from GOHR, tiger and sloth bear)?

All I know is from the photos and description from the recent masterplan. There are photos of flying foxes and one-horned rhinos, along with the Malayan tapir, tigers, sloth bear, and Komodo dragon that are already at the zoo.

I just uploaded 56 photos of Fresno Chaffee Zoo into the gallery and I also posted a recap of my visit on the thread Snowleopard's 2017 Road Trip.

They have announced that the former Asian elephant exhibit is going to become the Indian rhino exhibit, so maybe that will happen fairly soon.
