This was home to the Golden-headed lion tamarins for a while. They've since returned to the rainforest and it now houses Narrow-striped mongoose / Boky-boky.

I don't know the answer to your question, but I do remember the bell ringing to announce closing time in years past. But wasn't it a recording, not the actual bell, as there was a voice announcement too?

Four emperor tamarins and one golden-headed lion tamarin in the rainforest walkthrough, three(?) Goeldi's monkeys and two golden lion tamarins in side exhibits in the back part of the rainforest house, pair of golden-headed lion tamarins and I believe two pairs of pied tamarins offshow.

Was that sound supposed to be a bell? I remember a horrible mechanical klaxon sound followed by an announcement; I absolutely loved it. It would be great played at the end to a funeral, just as the curtains are closings.

Might not be 100% correct but I believe they don't advertise it as it's currently being used to house some of the animals used in the shows and they don't want too many kids etc. In there to give them a break from the noise and attention.

The sound I remember was a sort of clanging gong noise- I presumed it may have been a recording of the bell in the zoo mentioned above, but not certain on that. I'm talking 1960's-70's here.
 
I remember the clanging bell, as well as information being given in different languages, such as 'London Zoo ist nun geschlossen' or something to that effect.

Thanks for your help (and to the others that answered). Must be honest didn't see a lot in the rainforest walkthrough, must have been a quiet moment. Seems a shame to keep two species off-show, especially as they have a free exhibit in BUGS which used to be home to golden lion tamarins a while back.

One of the two species is already kept onshow, even if it is a solitary animal in the Rainforest ;)

A volunteer told me at least one pair of the pied tamarins will be going onshow within the coming year.
 
A pair of pied tamarins are now on-show in the callitrichid enclosures in Rainforest Life. Area is currently blocked off to allow them to settle in, but you can still see them (as I did today!)
 
Just a thought, what's going to happen to the occupants of the Snowdon?
The inhabitants must make up a good sized percentage of London Zoo's total species of birds.
Also, any news on the "landscaping" of the North Bank?
Grass replacing cramped, empty, Edwardian aviaries?
