I thought it might be time for another quiz.

Identify the animals labelled A to E.
What is the connection between these species?
Name a suitable species for the empty space labelled F.

There are no tricks, all the species were photographed in ambient light in the UK, and are still on show in the UK according to Zootierliste. Each specimen is facing to the right.

Only if the coat was ankle length, all street lights were out and there was a total eclipse of the moon :)

Between you both, there are two correct answers and two near misses. But I won't go into more detail yet, so that others can have a chance too.
 
I will go with the mythical creature theme and say,
a. angel ...shark
b. basilisk... lizard
c. chimera...shark
d. komodo...dragon
e. griffon....vulture
f. argus...pheasant
 
I think it's clearly a mythological creature theme also, perhaps narrowed even further to Greek ones.

The first one definitely looks like feathers, so I'll say Great Argus.

Then Basilisk, Chimaera, Komodo Dragon.

I don't know the fifth one - it looks mammalian but seeing I have no clue I'll go instead with dublinlion's Griffon Vulture.

And the mystery animal - I can't be bothered checking on Zootierliste, but I don't think there are any Harpy Eagles in UK collections. I'll avoid generic names as all of the above are common names for the species. I think Gentle Lemur would like Water Hydra though. But my answer is Satyr Tragopan.

Chlidonias is completely correct. But so is animal_expert, and (s)he actually suggested an answer for F that I hadn't considered (because I don't have a photo of the species): so Chlidonias wins the gold medal (metaphorically) and animal_expert richly deserves the silver one. Well done!
All of their suggested answers for F are correct. I think I have a photo of a harpy eagle in my slide boxes somewhere but it would need scanning and I do have some of Hydra, because one of my tanks got infested, but as it wasn't a zoo photo I didn't pick it. I could have used a satyr tragopan photo, but that would have been a third bird, which seemed like too many. Many years ago I tried to photograph the vampire bats in the Moonlight World at Regent's Park, but the results were dreadful. I also thought about a medusa, but that's not a species. The best choice of all would have been the fearsome old Polish centre-back Jerzy Gorgon, but he is human (probably).
MagpieGoose gets the virtual bronze for picking up the mythical monsters theme, plus a bouquet for making me smile for by picking the answer to A as his choice for F.
I do have an idea for a future quiz, but it's going to need some more work before I can tease you with it.

Argh, I arrive so late that even there are uncropped photos showing solutions now. I would have said: A clearly argus pheasant, B maybe chinese water dragon, C a chimaera (lucky bastard you!!!), D I think a monitor, probably komodo dragon, E no clue, I suppose a mammal. And the connection between all is that they refer to mythological creatures.

So, after the thread has developed, I see how big mistake I would have said with E. But proud to have recognized the Komodo dragon only by the tongue, hehe.

Still very envious of you about the chimaera, hehe. I arrived to Berlin when the aquarium have the sign of "Coming soon - Chimaeras"! So I've missed them for few weeks!
 
Thank you Kakapo, I had hoped that the quiz would be active for a few days longer, but even the first answers were surprisingly accurate. I will try to make the next one harder.
I agree about the chimaera, I saw them first at Blackpool Sea Life Centre when they were in quite a small tank, but I remember them as being very active and inquisitive (in the sense that they came up to the glass and seemed to be treading water, with those amazing pectorals, and looking at me with almost as much interest as I was looking at them). I think that was just before I got my first digital camera, so I didn't take any photos. The deepwater display at The Deep was very dark, and lit with blue light only but I had a go. As you can see in the small photo, they were kept with spider crabs. I think I will go back to The Deep soon, as I think my new D500 will give much better images and Zootierliste says that they still have chimaeras (perhaps new specimens of course). If I get any decent shots I will post them here ;)

I didn't see any on-display when I visited in May, unfortunately! I didn't remove the listing, however, as they could always be offshow.

OK. I am sure there are still plenty of other interesting subjects - it's been too long since my last visit in 2008.
 
Oh, plenty - quite apart from owt else, the Green Sawfish are alive and well, and they recently received two Loggerhead Turtle from Antwerp Aquatopia.

They were still present last December, and they kept on disappearing, so you may have just missed them.
 
There wasn't an exhibit signposted for them, I know that.

Seen the species elsewhere, anyhow.
