San Diego Zoo San Diego Zoo News 2017

On the bus tour today, I got a good view of the takin, as well as a decent number of other off-show animals. I'm no engineer, but the bridge still looks a long way from completion. If it's ready before the end of the summer, I'd be surprised...
Did you notice anything about the actual bridge that isnt near completion? They said they would open the bridge before the elevator stack.

All that is awaiting the bridge opening is one inspector's signature. He had yet to arrive, but construction is complete and that is the only barrier to its opening. This is only in reference to the actual bridge. The elevator stack is still under construction.

When's the bridge open?

As soon as an inspector arrives and validates it. He was supposed to be here yesterday but he's late. It'll probably be open today or tomorrow. The elevator stack is under construction and will not open with the rest of the bridge.

As of today, the bridge is still not open. They are doing some minor work on it, so I'm thinking they failed their inspection and are bringing it up to standards.

The bridge will most likely not open until the elevators are ready. Furthermore, the inspection is not a one-day occurrence; it can take multiple weeks.

Still a large number of people working on it; lots of heavy machinery still present; the metal staircase going up the side of the "legs" - I presume these are emergency exits - only half attached. No landscaping completed. I can't see it's the sort of thing that needs to be rushed: they've survived without it for years, so a few more months won't hurt.

I just got an e-mail announcing that the bridge is opening tomorrow. I am going and will bring my camera. I have to say, I am excited! Plus the red pandas and takins are back on exhibit. I am not sure when the pandas will be moved back. If I hear anything, I will post it.

Any info on when the elevator stack will open?

The article mentions "[...] there'll be bubbles, there will be fog machines and a light show going on that will light up the canyon and the whole area [...]"

I hope the "whole area" is pathways around and under the bridge or skyward rather than animal exhibits. A zoo first priority is obviously animals but entertainment is certainly a welcome addition if it doesn't detract.

This is from the San Diego Zoo website
"Experience millions of bubbles while on the Zoo's new Canopy Bridge, or watch the show from Hua Mei Cafe."

I watched the video and wow - that is a lot of hoopla made over an infrastructure project like a bridge with no animal exhibits.

Are the Takins and Red Pandas on exhibit yet? And is Panda Canyon open?
The Mountain Pit Vipers, the red pandas, and the takins (including a 2-week old male) are on exhibit. The pandas won't be moved back to the old exhibit until all the construction is done. The pathway along Panda Canyon is open and you can access the viper, red pandas, takins, and the Asian cat exhibits from both the north and south end.

That is true, Arizona Docent, the San Diego Zoo likes hoopla! This bridge will drastically change the way people can experience the zoo. I can't tell you the times my family and I never made it over to that side of the zoo. It was too hard for little ones, not to mention the people with mobility issues. So, while the bridge does not include animal exhibits, it does give everyone the ability to access many more animals.

The Zoo does not have Sloth Bears, or Hyenas anymore (Probably because of the Pandas moving to center street). But the Takins and Red Pandas are out!

Has anyone heard more about a completion date for Africa Rocks?....looking to plan a trip in late September but wanna make sure the whole complex is done

I talked to an employee 2 days ago while there and she said they are aiming for "end of summer". All of the netted exhibits looked done (there were about 4) but they still looked like they had quite a bit left to do.
