Chester Zoo Game

Okapi - Bristol of course, and London (for the discoverer and the Society).

nope- it is not a mammal.
The connection is through people associated with the species also being associated with the 2 collections.

Since it's been 24 hours, here's another clue: neither of the 'collections' exists today, but both sites currently have zoos on them.

I think the species is the hyacinthine macaw. This species is said to have been kept in Lord Derby's menagerie at Knowsley in the 19th century. It was also kept at Len Hill's original Birdland in Bourton-on-the-Water, where a pair were kept at liberty during the day and where I saw the species for the first time many years ago. The current collections at Knowsley and Bourton-on-the Water are very close to the sites of these original collections.

you're getting close @gentle lemur ; one of the collections is correct. The second collection was not a live animal collection, I may have been a bit mean in not disclosing that yet.

Do they still have Derbyan Parakeet?
yes, they do, and this species was the answer!
The two individuals being it's namesake Edward Stanley, 13th Earl of Derby, and Louis Fraser, who described the species, and was also once curator of the Zoological Society of London's Museum.
Your turn!

Yes, but the connection with ZSL is tenuous, because when Fraser wrote the description of the species in1850 he had already been employed by Derby for several years to catalogue his collection, where the skin of the type specimen was stored after its death. Before this was published Derby arranged for Fraser to go to Whydah in West Africa to serve as Vice Consul and to collect specimens for the Museum and the 'Aviary' at Knowsley (His Lordship did not like the term 'Menagerie' as it sounded too foreign ;)).

I think long enough has passed. Here's the next easy riddle.

It kind of looks like a pirate.
