Very sad news from Zie-zoo. Last night 10 sea gulls were killed. They were shot from outside the park. According to Dutch news sites, 6 herring gulls, 2 black-tailed gulls and 2 lesser black-blacked gulls died - of which at least one young bird. (The zoo only had 3 herring gulls, so I suspect 6 black-tailed gulls and 2 herring gulls were shot). No information on the shellducks who share the aviary with the gulls.

About 4 weeks ago, a serval-female gave birth and now the young start to explore the out-side enclosure :) .

Green-winged macaws stolen last night :(.
Bummer!

Happens so often these days (it first started with callichtrids and now macaws and parrots too!).
It really is time governments, law enforcement and judiciary authorities wake up to illegal wildlife crime and their networks. Currently, criminals have an almost free for all as all of that is lax, whereas the profits involved compared to say regular burglaries or drugs trade is phenomenal and by which these latter 2 pale into insignificance.

Another first for Zie-Zoo: 2 white-cheeked turacos have left their nest. The prairie dogs have multiple youngs too. The new born silver pheasants, helmed guineafowl, turkey and mandarin duck have been hand-reared.

I see in zootierliste that this zoo have a lot of very rare species. But many of them are not visible, they are behind the scenes. Do you know why and if they will show them one day?

Does Zootierliste mention that they are behind the scenes? If no, then the holding chart is probably just outdated. Zootierliste is rarely accurate when it comes to smaller, less-visited collections. If you visited the place yourself, how about you go and update it?

In this particular case ZTL is accurate, and the collection does indeed hold a lot of off-display taxa.

In fact, ZTL is updated by Zie-Zoo itself (which doesn't mean it's 100% accurate, but most of it is).

Zie-Zoo is still under construction, so the logical answer is that the exhibits for several of the taxa currently kept behind the scenes are not finished yet.

The new South American area was presented last friday. Although several animals are yet to arrive, the ones below are currently present. The area is not officially open yet, but visitors are allowed to view the nearly finished exhibit.

Current species:
- Vicuña
- South American Tapir
- Patagonian mara
- Chacoan mara
- Yucatan squirrel
- Plains viscacha
- Collared peccary
- Capibara
- Azara's agouti
- Maned wolf
- Greater rhea
- Bushdog
- Pond slider
- Ring-tailed coati (including albino)
- White-nosed coati

Also new but not officially open (like the South American area) was a small Australia/New Guinea area, a pond and a raptor aviary. These species are currently kept
- Red-necked wallaby
- Eastern grey kangaroo
- Dusky pademelon
- Laughing kookaburra
- Koi carp
- Sever sturgeon species
- Stellers' sea eagle (the current ones are rescued birds that will leave soon and will be replaced by others)

Australia area: interesting species set up with koi carp, sturgeon spp. and Steller's sea eagles!
Re eagles, these are part of (or soon will be) the EEP / EAZA? And replaced with ... birds?
What sturgeon species are maintained?

I think I wasn't clear enough. There a small Australia/New Guinea section and a pond (with carps and sturgeons) and a raptor aviary.

The current eagles are not part of the breeding programme, but they will be replaced by stellers' sea eagles that are. The eagles are part of a Northern Asia/Russia area which borders the South American area.

I'm sorry, I don't know which sturgeon species.
