If this parking garage is created would that allow the zoo to convert the current parking lots into exhibit space?

Yes.

"By consolidating visitor parking in a structure above the General Services Building (whose roof is the current Parking Lot C), the National Zoo will be able to reclaim Lots A and B to expand these areas as animal habitat."

I feel like I read on a zoo facebook group that once they had the parking garage, they could use the land where parking lot A and B were for giraffes. I feel like some other animals were named, but I cannot remember. We will see what happens.

Here's what the lots will be used for:

If you can't read it;

Parking lot A:

Animal Habitate Expansion
African Savannah

Parking lot B:

Animal Habitate Expansion
Global Desert

Parking lot D:

Environmental Demonstration Area
Rock Creek Sustainability

Well, I am hoping they keep the cheetah exhibit the same since they just spent all that money putting mesh around it.

I believe these projects are still years away. In the FY18 budget request the parking facility is listed as a future project in the five-year capital plan, but not any of the three in the image (the five-year plan is FY18-FY23).

Thanks for all of the information, Andrew. I appreciate it. Hopefully they can make this happen. It would be cool to see the National Zoo build a couple of more large scale exhibit areas and bring back giraffes and rhinos, which I assume they would do with the African savanna shown there. I wonder what they envision for the desert zone? Antelope exhibits for species like scimitar-horned oryx?

The screaming hairy armadillos video is good, I like in-depth keeper-narrated ones such as this one.
