Phase outs are usually for a number of reasons- lack of genetic diversity, lack of interest (either by the public or by the institutions keeping them), etc.I know this is an old conversation, but why does the AZA want to phase out cape buffalo?
I could see zoos phasing them out due to their aggression. But I am glad to see they aren't being phased out.I know this is an old conversation, but why does the AZA want to phase out cape buffalo?
Good point. Maybe I'm derailing the thread with this, but how common are water buffalo in the USA? Are they a phaseout species?Yeah. But elephants and hippos are known to be more aggressive, and zoos keep them, so I wouldn't see a use for getting rid of cape buffalo.
fun fact: water buffalo are farmed in the USA, albeit not to the same degree as other livestock.Good point. Maybe I'm derailing the thread with this, but how common are water buffalo in the USA? Are they a phaseout species?
Are they common in zoos? There are only domestic water buffalo in the US afaik.
