Phoenix Zoo Phoenix Zoo News

Any idea which animal(s) will get renovated/new exhibits besides sand cats? Are elephants on the list? Are rhinos coming back?

I am able to answer your question about the elephants. Yes, they will be part of it. Their exhibit space will be nearly doubled so all 3 can be out at the same time rather than having to rotate them so that is good news.

I visited this afternoon and early evening (March 27, 2017) for their extended March hours. A few minor observations.

1. Coyote exhibit is being renovated/expanded. The original exhibit is still there (and I saw two coyotes there) but the overlook is roped off. The large plot of land between coyote and javelina exhibits has been cleared. Sign just says watch for something new so I was hoping for a new species (since coyote exhibit is already large and perhaps the best exhibit on Arizona Trail). However I asked a park ranger in the area what it would be and he said coyote renovation.

2. Not sure when it happened, but admission fee has increased from $20 to $24.95.

3. Zoo is promoting vaquita rescue with signs at ticket booth and gift shop. (At ticket booth they ask you to round up to nearest full dollar amount with change going to vaquita rescue).

Having completed all phases of their last capital campaign, the zoo is embarking on a new one.

This page on their website gives some brief information about area closures for construction: Pardon Our Dust - Phoenix Zoo

This page gives specifics about the new campaign: The Pride Campaign - Phoenix Zoo Please note if you scroll down to the middle there are four tabs. You have to click on each tab to see the projects under that section (conservation, wildlife ampitheater, the tropics, africa trail).

A few of the key highlights are the aforementioned sand cat exhibit (which will adjoin the somewhat new event building), new exhibits for their existing lions and hyenas, plus the addition of a leopard and warthog predator/prey exhibit.

You must be excited with the thought of new exhibits for Sand Cats, African Lions, Caracals and leopards (obviously the Amur species). Other additions will be brand-new Galapagos Tortoise and Aldabra Tortoise habitats and arguably the biggest news of all is the doubling in size of the Asian Elephant exhibit...which is a much-needed construction project.

I am excited about all the cats except the caracal, because it is going to be in a nocturnal (reversed lighting) exhibit. Every nocturnal exhibit I have ever seen is awful (and the opportunity for quality photos nonexistent). I actually got some of my best caracal photos when I was there in March at their small children's zoo exhibit.

Three gila monsters born.

Giraffe calf and mother starting to spend short periods on exhibit.

Unusual pale faced Andean bear (Freckles) has arrived from Henry Doorly Zoo.

Redesigned cafe (to add indoor seating) is now open.

Two cotton top tamarins born.

Annual ZooLights will run from November 22, 2017 through January 14, 2018.

Does anyone know if the Henry Doorly Zoo getting rid of the Andean bear exhibit to put in its place? He's almost 30 years old so I was curious why they would move him.

It’s been mentioned before that the whole canyon could be renovated for polar bears.

Polar bears in Phoenix? Is that even possible? I mean , I know there’s one in Tucson, or was, but how will they protect them from the heat?
