Chester zoo memories

Am I right in thinking zebras used to be kept where the camels and onagers are now? And the camels were kept where the okapi are now?

Indeed. These changes took place around 2004-05 if I remember correctly, so still a fairly recent development. Meerkats and porcupines were also kept in the camel house, as I recall.

They were HGibbins. Grant's Zebra left in 2003, and until 1981 they shared their paddock with Fallow Deer.

I seem to remember tortoise too.

There was a small paddock adjoining the camel house built for tortoises in 1979 (I think), I can remember African Spurred, Greek and Hermann's and Radiated housed there. The enclosure would have been somewhere in the region of where the gaboon vipers are now kept. There was a shed with windows, allowing visitors to see the tortoises when they were inside and a small grass paddock.
