Cotswold Wildlife Park and Gardens Cotswold Wildlife Park news 2017

Hello everyone, I'm a student at Sparsholt and recently our female emu died. Therefore our lonely male emu, Monty, will be joining the Cotswold collection very soon. He will be missed as he is extremely friendly, due to being hand raised here at Sparsholt.

I've just noticed that Zootierliste has now listed Cotswold Wildlife Park as having Southern Cassowary now, is this true?

No sign of any on my visit in mid September

The reference is the cassowary studbook, so one would presume it is accurate. It may be one of those "off-show new animals" which the UK zoos seem to like having :p

Well, either way I'm surprised that they have got them on the list now. Especially since I wouldn't normally be expecting a zoo like Cotswold or anywhere to suddenly go into keeping them.

Wish they could do the same for Dudley Zoo and give them a better enclosure there. :D

I went there yesterday, for the first time. I didn't see any cassowary?

There are enough reasons why animals are kept behind the scenes and any zoo will have species on site that are not visible, I would trust an official studbook in these cases ;).

Briefly about my first visit....., the highlights were of course the Sifaka, but also the Piping Guan, Clouded Leopard & young, Coucal, Great Hornbill and the Wolverines.
I was not impressed with the Siamang, Abyssian Colobus or the Morelets Croc enclosures - way too small!
I actually reckon the Sifaka should have a much bigger area as I saw them make 3-4 jumps only to get from one end of the L-shaped enclosure to the other! It was a treat, but they surely deserve better?
Overall, a unique place, an odd but quite likeable layout and an old-fashioned feel.

I trust your profile pic is of one of your Shoebills at Zurich?

Cotswold already has a very nice bird collection, including several rare species, why is cassowary out of the question? :p

Agreed, given Cassowary have been on the decline in the UK in recent years ( Twycross and Bristol / Wild Place have lost them, no gainers until now), this is excellent news and Cotswold is as good a place as any to be a new holder!
