After a little Visit to a few places over the weekend I have added a few more places

9) Dudley Zoo
10) Shaldon Zoo
11) Paignton Zoo

Not sure when I will next add some more, but seeing as I am only doing this for fun and not taking it seriously,un-like last year when nobody was going to beat me.

Add another one not sure how many more I will add but suspect I will add a few so I give you

12) Birdland

5. Twycross 20/05/2017

6. Colchester Zoo 16/09/2017

This year has become very busy with other things (multiple job changes and moving house) so zoo visits have really fallen by the wayside!

Damn, it looked like the challenge misjudged the potential for enthusiasm this year. Maybe it was the potential distance to travel or maybe people rather chase down, and/or tick, rare things (which I'll try to remedy in next year's challenge).

It's looking like a neck and neck two horse race at the moment with Pipaluk on 18 and MagpieGoose on 17 (with ZooGiraffe, on 13, training a way back in third).

It looks like a visit or two over Christmas (or perhaps none at all) will settle the matter -we'll soon see.

Whilst not rabidly competed for I was pleased, at least, to hear some opinion on Drusillas and Bentley.

I haven't done all that many collections in the UK this year, and as such my total is a pretty poor three:

ZSL London
Chester Zoo
Battersea Park Children's Zoo

However, the last of these was a first visit, so I cannot complain :)

Don't worry I only got 2 from this year's challenge with Chester and Whipsnade!! Only if Blackpool was on the list...
Well, it is possible I could squeeze in at least a visit to Twycross by the end of the year but it is unlikely!

If only this had been last year, I would have scored 12! This year has not been as prolific with a total of just 5.

Bristol (23.2.17)
Chester (19/20.2.17 / 23.10.17)
Dudley (28.1.17 / 13.4.17)
Twycross (4 times so far, the last being 23.9.17)
Linton (18.4.17)

What was it like?

Quite enjoyed it, actually - considering the fact that it is a rather small and unpublicised collection not all that far from a much bigger and more famous one, it seemed to be getting quite a lot of footfall and held a fair few unusual species (Pallas' Squirrel, Northern Luzon Cloud Rat, Eastern Box Turtle) despite the fact it was very obviously aimed towards a low age demographic in terms of theming, signage and so forth. Unless you were visiting with children, you'd be hard-pushed to spend more than 45 minutes there I reckon - but it would be a very pleasant 45 minutes.

The walk from Battersea Park tube station to the zoo, through the park itself, was also very pleasant indeed :)

Thought it would be fun to work out what the most-visited collections were this year, in terms of challenge entries:

ZERO VISITS - Brighton Aquarium, Belfast, Isle Of Wight Zoo , Jersey, Curraghs, Skegness Natureland

ONE VISIT - Edinburgh, Drusillas, Chessington, Slimbridge, National Seal Sanctuary, Bentley Wildfowl, Hawk Conservancy, Newent, Banham, Linton, Newquay

TWO VISITS - Beale Park, Colchester, Welsh Mountain Zoo, Shaldon, Birdworld, Camperdown, Suffolk, Flamingoland

THREE VISITS - Paignton, Bristol, Dudley, Paradise Wildlife Park

FOUR VISITS - Battersea Children's Zoo, Birdland

FIVE VISITS - London, Whipsnade, Twycross

SIX VISITS - Chester

Some surprises there, and some things which were very much not a surprise :p

Well I've been to 2 collections that didn't, but could have, qualified for this years challenge; Waddesdon and Birmingham. But @Shorts ignored one and elected to discount the second one due to it's ownership change... Bloody pedantic sod! Granted those 2 would have only put me on 4 for the challenge but still... :p

17 Dudley 20/10/17
18 Chester 21/10/17

One more for me at least :

19 Flamingoland 17/12/17

A first visit and it was better than I expected. Some excellent enclosures, especially the Wallaby walk-through (saw 3 yellow-footed rock wallaby close up). Definitely well worth the £10.50 entrance!

I've enjoyed it and it's encouraged me to visit 8 new collections, including one i'd never heard of!

Oh, come on -where would this forum be without pedants (both full-time and part-time ones)?

I've always enjoyed my visits there (any collection with Common Hippo and those beautiful wallabies ticks boxes for me) though haven't been for quite a while, probably due to never being fully sure when it's "zoo only" open and having more tempting options with shorter drives.
