They piled the edges so hippos cannot get on it without modifications and taking them piles out now to create such an access for hippos would not be feasible with sea lions being in the lake.

They piled the edges so hippos cannot get on it without modifications and taking them piles out now to create such an access for hippos would not be feasible with sea lions being in the lake.
If the Hippos were allowed on there they would graze it down and then quickly turn it into a bare morass of churned up mud, very unsightly and I can't see it would be of any value as they must already have a 'land' area somewhere along the lakeside.

Do the Hippo's have access to the whole lake, as I only ever seem to see them on the far side by the bank, which I presume they have access to. I often wondered how much lake access they actually have, especially with the Sea Lions in the Lake.

Exactly is a no goer on many reasons. They do have a large field the opposite side of the house by sea lion beach.
Apart from where the pelicans have fenced off at the bottom of the lake they have free range of the whole lake. Sides have been piled so that the is a sheer side so they cannot climb out of the lake other than into the field and into the yard next to there house.
it's been nearly 2 weeks now since Nico the Gorilla passed away in his sleep. a big thank you to everyone for their support over this very sad time. I will continue to be a Longleat Lover for many years

I'm the Longleat Lover for years and I'm not at Longleat until September so I will wait for the summer
I can't remember any decent trees on there, otherwise gibbons could be a good choice.
I wonder about Capuchins? Still need climbing opportunities though.
There aren't any proper trees, just shrubs, but they could easily put up some natural-looking timbered frames and dead trees I guess.
Of course, he currently has access to the indoor and outdoor areas at the zoo but spends most of his days asleep inside a holding den. He can communicate with the other 3 males but maybe like Joe at Twycross, he would be 'happier' in his own territory? Could he now mix with a female, or is it too late? I don't want him to leave Devon, but if its time.......

I wonder if Longleat will add any female gorilla to thier gorilla conoly with Kescho,Alf and Evindi.
Simply put, no.
I'm not sure if EEP would sanction moving another Gorilla, even a 'bachelor male' onto Nico's old island at Longleat, certainly without an upgrade of the indoor area which I believe is very basic, and the building itself may be unsound. Nico and Samba arrived there so long ago that standards accross the board have raised since then. I believe Pertinax deserves better than that though it seems unlikely because of his genetic representation that he will ever see females now.

in about 11 days time on the 10th February the new season at Longleat begins
That would be a pretty silly thing to do.
