Naomi, a 23 year old female Western Lowland Gorilla has arrived at La Palmyre from Kolmarden Zoo.
That's good news. I knew she was going to leave Kolmarden- originally Antwerp was mentioned. She will replace the female they lost a year or two ago. She is an experienced breeder but the question remains whether La Palmyre silverback Nyuki is also- or was the baby fathered by the younger male?
The website Gorilla Land states that Nyuki was the father of the last baby at La Palmyre although it may not be 100% accurate
What is the name of the possible younger male?
Ans where is he residing?
I don't trust that- in this particular case anyway. I've asked La Palmyre direct several times but never had an answer so far.
His name is Bangui- he was born at La Palmyre in 2009 and still lives there. The issue is whether he in fact sired the baby at a very young age, rather than silverback Nyuki, who may or may not be a breeder- he has no previous offspring having not lived with females formerly. They'd need to have done a DNA test to prove it either way -unless they know for sure Nyuki doesn't mate.
I believe their is a troop of five, a breeding pair plus their three youngsters.
The breeding male is 11 and the female is 8, whilst the first youngster was born in 2012, the second in 2014. The third was born in late 2016/early 2017, I don’t know the exact date.
Bangui is going/or has already gone to Dublin Zoo now as their new male. He is the father of the last baby, not Nyuki, I have on good account now, so already a proven breeder.
Red ruffed lemur triplets born late-May, a great success for the zoo, as they are heavily involved in Lemur conservation.
The zoo states “The youngsters, whose sex has not been determined yet, are doing well. This is the fourth litter our 9-year-old female. Our group now has 8 individuals.”
