Hopefully lot of things to look forward to

  • Finishing Project Polar Reserve 4
  • Maybe expecting Yupi Polar Bear from Mexico (See Zoocheck)
  • Expansion of the park across from Land of the Tiger
  • Lots of new enclosures as part of new expansion
  • Bird Pond and Bird Houses near Meerkat Manor updated
Hopefully much more as well

What animals are planned in this new expansion??
They’ve been very careful not to say which is a really good move as I would imagine it won’t be definite until they are ready to move in and it saves people being disappointed but but on one of the plans it mentions;
Gorillas
Hippos
Sealions
Penguins
Dhole
Komodo Dragon
Crocodiles
Sun bears
Bats.

Visited YWP today and noticed the enclosure under construction to the east of the entrance road, south of the water treatment works (pic). It has a boundary fence exactly the same as project polar, it has a 'bunker' with an entrance made from wooden poles (white on pic). Couldn't decide whether there was an excavation (a pool) in front of the entrance. There's also a fenced off viewing area running along the northern edge of the enclosure which would connect to the path at the camel enclosure. We've seen the article on Yupik, could this be a female polar bear enclosure....!!!? Any views?IMG_20180217_155351.png

It’s currently on the planning website as a “holding” enclosure however they have done this before when they haven’t wanted to reveal what it is for.

I agree the plans look remarkably similar to project polar and the possibility it is for a female bear have crossed my minds several times.

I thought they couldn’t bring in a female due to the possibility of the males beginning to fight over her?

That’s what they originally said however this new enclosure if it is indeed for a female bear is a considerable distance from project polar.
Wonderful news then if this is the case! If she was brought to the zoo would they look to breed her with the existing males at the zoo or would YWP be her “retirement home”?

I'd meant to visit before my membership expired (yesterday) but will wait a while now to renew it. How is the area next to the Tigers shaping up?

Agreed, holding enclosure and also agreed that they have done this before;)

They have said that they only plan to keep male bears which are surplus to the breeding programme, however plans can change. They could bring a female in but she would have to be kept a good distance for the males otherwise they would get agitated. That said Nissan and Nobby (and Pixel to a large extent) still don't really know what that thing is for yet - PBs don't become sexually mature until 6yrs plus. Highlands Wildlife Park have Victor's sister, Victoria, with two male bears - again well separated.

It's clearly possible (birds and the bees and all that) but I would be surprised, especially if it is Yupik. As I understand she's 26 yrs old and not in great physical health and her mental must be poor I'd be surprised if she could handle a cub appropriately. That said she has good genes (not represented in the zoo population) as I believe her parents were wild bears.

HOW BIg was the enclosure
Not big. Difficult to see but would estimate at half the size of one of the current enclosures at Project Polar, if not smaller.
If this is a female enclosure I'd say, based on what we can see, that I wouldn't be very impressed. YWP have done an incredible job in having the largest PB enclosures in the world which are based on actual N. Canadian terrain, Project Polar is a superb design, this new enclosure is not like that at all...!!?
